Thread: Info needed on wirehaired daschunds

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by timberdoodle528
Was wondering if anyone could give me some reference/opinions on these dogs and using them to track deer. We've been looking into getting a pup from John and Jolanta Jeanneney's kennel (NY) Has anyone got a pup from them or knows someone that has one? Thanks in advance.

I was watching a duck hunting show and the jist of the program was a client told his guide he could train ANY dog to be a great bird dog. The guide laughed, so a year later he showed up the gift of a Jack Russell Terrier that he took the time to train... and to this day that is the guides favorite bird dog. So I am sure some people are gonna laugh but the rat terrier I got off ...

I just had a visual of someone with a WILD haired dachsund on a leash tracking deer. My sense of humor is hard to explain sometimes. You got to admit it's not something you'd expect to see.

I know it does seem to make a funny picture, but actually these dogs were bred to track. This kennel has imported dogs from Europe and breeds them solely for deer tracking purposes. (but only a couple litters/year). Outfitters from Canada to Illinois to Texas buy these dogs to help find wounded deer. Pretty neat little dogs... check them out - http://www.born-to-track.com/

Wow, great trackers. Very interesting dogs and not at all what I expected. Live and learn. Sure would be easier to clean up behind than our English Setter and Wire Haired Griffon.

Timberdoodle, If you are interested the president of UBT has one WHD pup for sale. He is out of working blood lines and more than likely related to the Jeanneney's bloodlines. If so let me know and I can get you his contact info. Yes WHD make great tracking dog and rabbit dogs. They are easy to take with you when going to track and easy on the house. Ken

From memory mind you but I believe daschunds are among dogs with the greatest sense of smell.

Wildlands, what is his name? I've been talking to a guy today that has one male pup left. He's from South Carolina, his name is Dean Davenport. Not real excited about driving to SC but I'm pretty impressed with how serious these people are with these dogs. Jolanta referred him to us if we wanted a pup sooner than next July. Dachshund I will have to look up where I was at. I know I fley into Nurenburg and flew out of Munick. I have all the places written down somewhere. I do know one of the places was right on the old Soviet line as there was an old check station about 100 meters down from where we entered the revier. I hope yall had a good time I look forward to seeing those pictures.

Wildlands, I don't know the specific Revier they're in, but it is close to Berlin (Brandenburg). I was supposed to go too, but couldn't due to family obligations here... You may know that in the Berlin area the wild boar population is getting out of hand. These animals are also seen in the city. The hunters can't hunt in the city and the Berlin police does not know how to kill the boars. Parks are closed now (till January)...

Hi, we are back again. The hunting areas we were are "Reiersdorf", "Poraz" and "Zehdenick". I think, Stefan will set up some fotos (I don't know how this works here).

Few more thoughts regarding my last post: 1. There was one error there. It is Keena who has Asko on both sides of pedigree not Paika. 2. The breeding startegy we use most of the time is called assortative mating . It is described very well in articles by late John Armstrong. You can google it. We don't inbreed and if we linebreed, it is usually not very closely. 3. We prefer tighter and harsher, more functional coats on wires than some...

Jolanta, Thank you for your comments. As a person who is learning about tracking wounded whitetails and owner of a one year old miniature dachshund I hope you will continue to contribute on Michigan sportsman. Welcome to the site!

I think this is great all background info were getting, but i think we need to start a thread on the small game forum of all the other things we do/hunt with our dachshunds. It would be great if dachshund and Stefan could comment on all the things they do with there dogs and also post a bunch of pics of there dogs in action. People around here still think i'm nuts when i try and explain to them how versatile these dogs are.
