I'm reading Forrest Griffin's Got Fight right now, and just reached the part where he is talking about the infections he has gotten from rolling with people (including a staph infection that got into his blood and nearly killed him). I was curious: how common are things like ringworm, scabies, staph, or even herpes? Is this something where you might meet a BJJ guy once in your life who once ...
I've been grappling for 4 years and never encountered a case here in the UK but I'm led to believe it's worse over in the U.S. and on the rise. In addiiton you have to remember that Griffin as a pro fighter is going to be doing a LOT more rolling than you're average Joe with a far wider range of people.
Ive had nothing for 4 years, then both ringworm and impertigo inside 3 months, both were from visting other gyms, both were from nogi.
Its not uncommon but nothing major, as long as you get everything treated ASAP, and your mats get cleaned regularly.
It happens every now and then. I haven't been grappling for all that long so I haven't had to deal with any of the stuff, but I do hear the occasional horror story from people around the gym. It's certainly not a common enough occurrence to be worried about. As long as the mats are cleaned regularly things are usually fine. Also, teachers at our club don't hesitate to mention to people when their...
I've had ringworm twice: once after a NAGA (grappling competition) and once after rolling in an out-of-state gym. Both were no-gi experiences.
Most places I've trained in have been pretty clean. My current gym cleans the mats three times a day.
There was a staph epidemic in MMA for a bit; Miletich's gym was hit pretty hard and four or five guys had to cancel fights. Even now, guys ...
Infections happen. A lot more than most people realize.
I had to do home surgery on my own leg to lance and staph infection abscess. No joke. I could basically get my pinky finger into it up to the first knuckle. Had to clean and dress it daily. Had to get on meds to get it to fall back and man... you don't keep it packed it will fill up with fluid and gunk. Infection vector central. Took ...
Thanks everyone for the info.

I got an Impetigo infection a few years ago, but not in the gym I'm with
now. I also had a boil on my leg just above the knee, which apparently is a
very strange place to get one, and that has left a scar. I've also seen one
or two bad staph infections. In Kokoro we sanitize the entire gym every
week - heavy bags, all the pads, the mats, spare gear etc. I always
sanitize my gloves every week too....
Living in fear of developing herpes of the frickin' neck might not be rational if it's a low enough percentage. Living in fear of your wife, who believes you are risking giving her herpes of the neck because you have the wrong frickin' hobby, is ENTIRELY rational

yeah but I don't think it's anywhere near common in BJJ. Not sure what the numbers would be... but I'm guessing BJJ is a fair bit different than wrestling in the amount of contact. In particular for the Gi sessions. For some reason when they mention wrestlers I just think of highschool and college team wrestling... which is generally done in singlets and seems to have a lot more skin to skin contact than does BJJ. You can come...
I had a few bad eye infections from mma, the sports centre we train at isn't great for clean mats. We now have our own place though and the mats are disinfected regularly. I wash with anti bac the tea tree shower gel now, I also use no water hand sanitiser when rolling with different people just to be safe.
