Thread: In need of home for Lab

Started 1 month ago by elmhurstvick
Hi, I have a 3 year old lab. He's always been fearful of strangers but last week he got out and bit my neighbor. I need to find a organization to take him that specializes in this temperment. He's a wonderful, loving and very affectionate dog to those he's close with. I can take anything out of his mouth, I can pick up his food anytime. He's very playful towards my older lab and never had a ...

Since it seems like he does so well with you can you crate him when the grandkids come over? Has he ever bit anyone else? Have you tried to work with him on his fear? If he just simply can not be trusted with people maybe instead of getting rid of him it would be better to have your vet put him down. That is just my opinion.

Wow, I totally disagree with bigdogs. If he was attacking people for no reason all the time, I might say put him to sleep, but that doesnt at all sound like thats the case. If he is fine with you and your family and not good with strangers, the answer is simple. Keep him away from strangers. If your not sure of the grandchildren, crate him or confine him away from the kids when there there. And ...

I am not saying that this can't be worked through. I am just saying if I had a dog that has a bite history (whether it be one time or twenty) and for whatever reason i could not keep him, knowing that he has bitten before, I would not rehome the dog I would have him put down.

Have you tried getting a trainer/behaviorist for him? I hope you consider doing so. They can also temperment test him in order for you to find out what triggers him. In some cases training can prevent this from ever happening again. I agree with Luv and would try to work with him before making a drastic decision to get rid of him or put him to sleep. Keep him crated when children or...

I totally agree with BIGDOGS. You cannot responsibly rehome a biter. The OP should work on the behavior with behaviorist or a trainer, but the dog should not be rehomed with a bite history. The OP is even concerned about the dog around his/her grandchildren. That says that the dog, in his/her mind is unpredictable. Slipping out the door and biting a neighbor is not a simple behavioral issue...

No disrespect intended but.....not even a rescue group FM?

I've rehomed 2 dogs that had issues where they were. I was totally honest with the new parents, very honest. Happy to say both had no issues in there new homes. I certainly wouldnt rehome the dog to a household with children, but I'm sorry, I just dont agree that the dog shouldnt be rehomed. Again, we're not talked about a ferocious animal here. Every situation is different. One dog I rehomed, ...

No disrespect taken. What rescue in their right mind will take in a known biter when there are literally thousands and thousands of non biters who need homes? What type of liability is then on that rescue if they take in a known biter and adopt it out? That is what my, and I am assuming BIGDOG's point.

Guess I would like more info. Are you concerned about the grandchildren because of this one instance with the neighbor or has he challenged them in some way in the past? What was going on when the bite occurred? Nip, bite, snarling attack? Recent addition to your family or have you had him for 3 years?

Excuse me, I have the darn flu. I reread Bigdogs post and agree with everything said. I had first thought it implied one bite would equate to the dog being put to sleep. I now see it is against rehoming a dog with a bite history, which I agree with. If the owner is at fault, for instance remember the saint bernard posted who was pulled around by the ears by a child while in the yard, I think rescue is best.

And if the dog showed bite inhibition, I totally agree. And the owner should be flogged. I hope you feel better soon!

This is good info, Pollysmom. I thought this issue had been discussed on PF before, and the same conclusion drawn.

OP, what were the circumstances? I tried to catch a small dog running lose, and I got nipped. Didn't break the skin, thankfully. I thought about taking it up with the owner just to teach them a lesson (they were inside a grocery store and left the dog outside, loose, with their brother in a motorized cart ), but decided wasn't worth it. I didn't fault the dog, because he had a crowd of us around him, trying to catch him as he...
