Hassan had a great question for me today...he wants to know why he can't use "cooker". His sentence was, "My mother is a great cooker". His reasoning? A teacher teaches. A runner runs. A swimmer swims. So, why not, "A cooker cooks"?? I am completely stumped as to the reasoning behind why we say "a cook" and not "a cooker" when speaking about a person who cooks. I've tried ...
A cooker, as in a small stove, does indeed cook, just like an oven bakes
and a pan fries. The name of the person doing the cooking, however, happens
to be cook or chef.

Well, at the time, I told him that English was crazy and his brain would hurt if he expected it to make sense all the time, but I also told him that I'd check to see if there was a rule I wasn't aware of. Then MY brain hurt trying to find that dang rule. :D
I had a similar discussion with students today, to which I concluded to
them that English is stupid. Too many autre-language influences that
nothing makes any logical sense.
