Thread: I'm coming out...

Started 1 month ago by LouLou7
of lurking. I am scheduled for surgery (VSG) on 11/30 and have a question about coffee: I'm a hard core coffee drinker with a two pot a day "habit". What's the best way to reduce/eliminate my caffeine addiction prior to surgery so that I won't have caffeine withdrawal headaches post-surgery?  Thanks? LouLou7

( Welcome LouLou!!!! You'll doooo fine! I was in the same boat as you. I drank coffee on my pre-op diet until the night before surgery. I had a slight headache on day 2 of post -op. I tried coffe after surgery and didn't like the taste at all. It was about 3 months post-op before my tastebuds enjoyed it again. Donna ,)

I drank coffee every morning. On the pre-op diet I switched to decaf and reduced to one cup. Post-op I haven't had any coffee but I really don't seem to miss it. I'm so busy trying to get all my other things in that instead of coffee, I reach for orange juice in the morning, and if I have time I also do a protein drink before work. I don't really miss the coffee at all which was a big surprise....

( I would start weaning yourself now. Two pots of coffee a day is quite a bit and the caffeine headache could be pretty huge. Cut the cups down between now and surgery date. Try to be off of it by then and then you won't have to deal with the withdrawl headache. I found substituting a cup of black tea for coffee helpful. The meds they give your for pain in the hospital, morphine and ...

( I loved coffee before surgery and drank at least one to two cups in the morning every day.  Since surgery I can't stand the smell or taste of coffe.  Weird eh?  I keep trying to see if this has changed every few weeks, but no, still hate it 4.5 months out. ,)

Thanks, NSD.  I can't imagine not loving the taste of coffee,  but I'm going to have to kick my habit, so I want to do it in the least painful way I can. LouLou

Did you switch to decaf all at once, or did you try half-n-half for a while?  Anytime I've tried decaf instead of the real thing I ended up with a killer headache, which I really want to avoid.

I agree, the caffeine withdrawal headache is KILLER. I think I'm going to try half and half (decaf and real) this week, then full decaf next week.  Hopefully by the 30th it will at least be reduced, if not eliminated. My doctor says caffeine is dehydrating, and it sounds like I am really going to have to work hard to just get my fluids in at first, so I don't want to make it harder by ...

Thanks, Elina. Is it just coffee, or have your tastes for other things changed too? I'm not sure what I'll do with my hands all day at work if I'm not holding a cup of coffee. I guess I'll be holding my big water jug, right? LOL LouLou

( Please do what you can to get off that addiction for NOW...cause yes coffee dehydrates and dehydration is the BIGGEST problem immediate post op.  I currently get 13 cups of water a day \(on average\) so me having a cup or two of coffee is no biggie. You actually drink 2 POTS??  How do you ge****er in too? ,)

I'm going to have to transfer my addiction from coffee to water, I think. Maybe eventually I can add decaf back in. LouLou

That protein coffee sounds good. I'm going to try that. I've already had my surgeon consult, but I have my pre-op nutrition class next Monday with the nutritionist and the nurse, so I will definitely ask them. The surgeon said decaf is fine, but no coffee for a long, long time afterwards. I've been wanting to kick this habit for a long time, so this is the right time, I think. Once I get over the withdrawal problems I'll...

( Hi LouLou, I have lost my taste for eggs too.  I used to like them, now just the thought of them makes me sick.  I used to love sushi, now not so much.  On the other hand, I used to hate chicken breast, I thought it was way to dry.  Now, I love it.  Weird.  I haven't tried pasta, rice or dread yet, so I am not sure how I will relate to them.  I hope I hate them too. ,)

( I've read a bunch of the studies.  Everything I've read says that - if you are a "regular" coffee drinker - coffee is no more of a diurretic than plain water. I've drank coffee \(1 or  XL cups a day usually\) since about 3 weeks after surgery.  I gave my "Sleevie" a break for the few weeks around surgery, more for the 'acid stomach" that sometimes comes with coffee for me than anything else....

( Other people who went cold turkey after surgery have said on OH that they still had headaches and wish they'd done it pre-op. Maybe the pain meds don't touch that kind of pain?? IME it takes about 3-5 days to get over the withdraw pains so a week out should be fine. Especially if you do cut down beforehand. ,)

( I probably drank 1 pot a day but I switched to half-caf a long time ago and then a week or so before surgery switched to decarf.  They gave me sanka in the hospital so I bought a jar when I got out.  Switched back to regular a couple weeks later.  I drink half-caf now and love coffee as much as ever. Kat Edited to add...I drink at least my 64 ounces of water a day so I was never too concerned about not enough liquid.  Just don't sub...

( i was 2-3 litres of coke a day pre surgery... quite one day, one month pre op... never touched it again... i don't drink tea of coffee so there was nothing to do but suffer withdrawals..... it hurt my head, eyes and neck... a little like meningitis i suspect.... and i literally slept 20 hours a day until it was over... took about 5 days... but i'd been a cafffeine addict for 22 years. I now have none, rarely think of it....and feel...
