Thread: Ideal Exhaust Diameter for the GC

Started 5 months, 3 weeks ago by satheian
Does anyone know what size exhaust is ideal for the GC? I know Kristn's custom was 3in,as are many aftermarket ones. But is this the best choice? If i get a custom exhaust made, what size piping should be used, and what RPM range should be targeted when making considerations for this? I also wouldn't be surprised if they are actually different for the 2.0T and the 3.8, and maybe even dif for...

Note: Posted this last night, but the Mods saw fit to delete it for some reason; this topic started in the backpressure myth thread, but I have moved it out for more visibility and because it wasn't really on that topic anymore.

I'm running dual 2.25" at the moment. It makes no sense to run any bigger, the E92 M3 V8 4.0 runs a dual 2.5".

satheian replied 5 months, 2 weeks ago
What comes stock on the v6? What kind of gains have you seen since installing your custom dual?

matt@qc replied 5 months, 2 weeks ago
I'd venture to say around 8 to 12 whp. No dynos. Stock is as followed: 2x 2.00" downpipes and form into a single 2"3/8 OD.

def a hard call... the 'loss of torque' is probably low end of the RPM range. w/ 3" piping, there is more volume in the pipes to fill. i forget all the technical jargon but this can hurt a bit and would explain the low end loss. it would help though on the high end. on turbo'd cars, 2.5" will usually suffice up to low 300hp range, maybe w/ a 3" cat and downpipe. 3" does have a marginal ...

Ninjaman replied 5 months, 2 weeks ago
^^ jc, 2.5" is actually better for well more than 300 horses. Exhaust sizing with turbocharged cars depends on the size of the turbo (output), and the flow rate of the motor (this particular property applies to N/A). Keep in mind that certain formulas help with torque, others help with top end. It's all in what you're designing your car to do. Also, I think the technical term that you were ...

Oh, and I forgot to add that the LS7 Corvette comes with a 3" that funnels down to a 2.5" system... 505hp at the crank right there.

satheian replied 5 months, 2 weeks ago
Hmm, so it makes sense to start wider and then have a narrower catback? I have the 2.0T and don't plan on having over 300whp

Ninjaman replied 5 months, 2 weeks ago
No, I am saying that having a 2.5" exhaust system is plenty for most people. Don't fall for the propaganda out there. Remember, the companies that endorse a 3" exhaust system want your money. With your goals in mind, go with a 2.5". You will save money!

Going from smaller to larger would cause the flow to slow down at the end of the exhaust system compared to the header. By narrowing the exhaust it would increase velocity. I suspect that if you are wanting to design some noise into it you could use these to accomplish it. I would expect the higher velocity to produce a higher pitch and the lower velocity to produce a lower pitch. This ...

So I also noticed that "According to AMS' measurements, the factory exhaust has a 2.375-inch (60mm) outer diameter and is crushed down to 1.75-inch for about 8 inches in length to clear an underbody brace." While HKS has released a 60mm (2.36220472 in) cat-back. Why would they make it narrower than stock?

before the exhaust upgrade i was unable to get full boost before shifting 2nd gear and with the 3" i was hitting full boost in first gear lol

Like what my mods guys tell me, if I want to put a turbo on this car, you need to thinking this before you doing this modification, the diameter will change and he think a dual 3" will be great and the cat will be changed too for more performance one! Without this modification, I agree with you, just by double it the original exhaust pipe will add better result. On the canadian model, we have two cat but only one muffler!

2.5 tops for hp, but 2.25 for torque.

Thats weird ^ on my s13 when I went back to stock (2.25) from 3 inch, I attained boost at a lower RPM than with the 3 inch doesnt that mean that you would spool faster with smaller diameter piping and have a higher peak boost with the bigger diameter piping????. For moderately modified turbo cars I always thought bigger was better, 3 inch was Ideal, IMO it all comes down to exhaust design.

I checked up my stock exhaust. It is 2 inch piping but in the middle, they crushed up into 1.5 inch. wtf
