Thread: I thought we were past this!!! - Housebreaking issue

Started 3 months, 3 weeks ago by Silenceafable
I'm not sure exactly what's going on here. Shadow has been really good with his housebreaking for a few months, now, but within the last week, he has had several accidents in the house. We just moved, and when he had two accidents at the old house, I thought that I was so busy with packing that I missed the signals from him telling me he needed to go outside. Now that we are in the new house, ...

Dogs are very concrete. When he was housetrained, he learned "don't go to the bathroom inside THIS house." Then you moved. Whole new house - maybe the same rules don't apply! That's actually pretty common. Add in all the stress of the move, and it's pretty easy to see where there would be confusion! The good news is they usually learn the new definition pretty quickly.

The good news is they usually learn the new definition pretty quickly. That IS good news! He does seem to know he is doing something wrong. When he knows we see what he's done, his tail drops between his legs, and he heads straight to his crate. We don't crate him as punishment, but I think he is just going to his sanctuary.

Try leashing him to you for a few days, so that as soon as you see potty behavior you can get him outside. Throw the potty party again outside, and go out very frequently. Does he have a set command for telling you he wants to go out? Really work on that. You should be through this pretty quickly!

I will definitely try the leashing, and I've started giving treats again and praising like crazy when he goes outside. I had stopped doing the treats when he was doing so well with housebreaking because I didn't want him to just go out so he could get a treat (my aunt's Pug goes out, and then she sits on the porch waiting for her treat without even going into the yard). I don't have a command ...

My intention is not to high jack this post...but I have a related question and my search didn't turn up any super relevant results. And sorry, but it's kinda of long. Mods feel free to move to a new thread if appropriate... Aala is 2. She has been house trained with no accidents for I guess 1.5-1.75 years. She's also crate-trained and normally crated while I'm at work. Since she just turned 2 ...

jenn&Aala Maybe it's a scheduling issue? I could have missed some things in your post (and I haven't had my coffee yet this morning) but it sounds like there have been a lot of changes in your's and Aala's schedule. That could throw her off. When we take Molly for stayovers at our friend's house, we always try to maintain a similar schedule with walking/feeding/going to the bathroom as when we ...
