Thread: I need a math expert to back me up....

Started 1 month ago by Carousel96
or at least be gentle when you tell me I'm wrong! I know I shouldn't bring PP'r friends into a "discussion" with DH, but I need someone to back me up here. Last night we somehow got onto the topic of the Pythagorean Theorum (Don't ask! It started with DD asking about the Wizard of Oz and the scarecrow being wrong and it went downhill from there!) At first DD insisted that all right ...

The Pythagorean Theorum applies to all right triangles.

I suspect he's referring to the 3-4-5 method of determining a 90 degree intersect, which applies to any 90 degree angle intersect, regardless of final shape...

All right triangles!

DyanKJ130 replied 1 month ago

Yeesh - I really don't like Math! I was so hoping your post was going to have something to do with creative Disney Math and talking your DH into a trip! Ah well, expanding your mind is a noble pursuit!

As previous posters have said, you are definitely correct. In any right triangle, the length of one of sides next to the right angle (a leg), multiplied by itself, added to the length of the other side next to the right angle (the other leg), multiplied by itself, equals the length of the side opposite the right angle (the longest side, or hypotenuse) multiplied by itself. Conversely, if the ...

OK, funny side story about my B.A. in English...when I went back to college after my divorce, I was informed that the rules had changed and I had to take a math class. I turned an odd shade of green and started to hyperventilate. My oh-so-wise advisor then discovered that "Math Techniques for Elementary Education" was actually a MATH class!!! My final exam was presenting an elementary math concept in a creative way. I taught...

I'm glad there are so many smart Passporters here to handle such questions. I must not have paid enough attention in Math in high school.

I forgot all that stuff. And I used to be pretty good in math! I'm glad there are people here who remember it.

It applies to all right triangles but I'm more curious how the discussion got from the Wizard of Oz the Pythagorean Theorem
