wow, i had a 740 wagon, loved that car, but it is dead now, it had over 300k miles, sold it for scrap when the head cracked.
u can fix it, there is some stuff for 100 dollars that fixes cracked aluminum heads, sorry cant help, my girlfriend is a maniac tonight,,,

Probably low oil pressure causing the knock or the main bearings are worn
out, the smoke is from the rings being bad, u need to have it rebuilt or
changed.It will stop running if not looked at soon.
White smoke is usually a bad head gasket. If compression in 2 adjacent
cylinders is lower than the rest that is a pretty good indication of a bad
gasket.
