Is a closer that important on a rebuilding team??? Steve, IMO, has it correct. www.masnsports.com/2009/11/closing-time.html

IMO, only to a point. Tillman goes out there a half a dozen times and pitches through 7 with a lead only to have it blown by some mediocre misfit, it's gonna wear on him. Lose enough and it will have an adverse effect on the whole team as well. Him saying that wins don't matter to a young pitcher is bull cookies. That BS of wins don't matter is a crock that's been overflowing within this ...

I agree with this. If we are going to sign one type A free agent we should sign multiples. If we sign Lackey, we should also get Wagner. Because of diminishing returns on draft picks, our financial status, and our protected first round pick we can afford to go after a few of them.

The "mediocre misfit" could be any one of the F/A pitchers that were signed three years ago for over market sums of money. His/My thoughts are to see if Koji, Johnson, Ray, etc.. from within may very well be the option that would be to the clubs advantage. Without evaluating if they can or cannot do the job may leave us with all of their 40 man roster spots as being a waste . I would ...

I read some stuff recently by MacPhail that he values closers fairly significantly. That's certainly contrary to what a lot of us might think on here. But he believes it and that's what counts. I would not be surprised at all that we get Wagner. I'd guess he's our primary and most realistic FA target right now.

As a former closer and starter throughout my entire baseball career..i have seen what happens to a team when you have a domant closer and when the one you have is inclined to blow big leads..so the arguement that closers arnt an important role to your team can be a tricky one...i think its worse for a team to build a lead only to see it lost in the last inning...given the current staff we do ...

Koji Uehara still is an excellent choice as closer - he throws strikes and gets outs. With a year experience in MLB, he has the ability to be an excellent mlb closer. I would rather the O's spend their money more wisely than to pay Billy Wagner $5-8 million per year AND give up our second-round pick to do it. No thanks, spend that money on Nick Johnson and/or Troy Glaus, get Bedard, ...

I agree with you, I think he has it absolutely correct.

"I read some stuff recently by MacPhail that he values closers fairly significantly. That's certainly contrary to what a lot of us might think on here." Yeah, I read that too. It's really sad if he thinks spending $5-8 million on Wagner and bringing in Pedro Effing Feliz will accomplish what needs to be accomplished. Let's hope he's smarter than this.

Please get Beltre or Glaus NOT Feliz

Dave W replied 3 months, 2 weeks ago
Beltre can't get on base, he's only been a good offensive player one year in his career (and not in the past four years). I'm not a Beltre fan. He's better than Feliz, but he's not good. Just say no to Beltre, please.

He didn't retire. His team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, and he mentioned the possibility of retiring in a post-game interview.

Adrian Beltre Lifetime Vs LH Pitcher as a RH Batter .277 AVG .353 OBP .457 SLG .810 OPS Liftime 2ND Half .281 AVG .335 OBP .485 SLG .821 OPS Liftime Road .287 AVG .338 OBP .488 SLG .826 OPS I could live with this if his defense stays steller.

His away splits were 858 and 862 OPS in 2007 and 2008. How is that not good, especially considering his defense? Granted he's not a great OBP guy. I'm not sure an injury plagued season in 2009 is a sign of a trend. I'd give him a 3 year deal at 6 mil per year. As long as he has a NTC he'll more than likely have trade value and we should be able to move him when Bell is ready. That's a calcualated risk I guess, but...

In my opinion the Orioles already have their closer. Chris ray should be the closer. He only lost his role as a result of injury not because he was ineffective. He should be given the opportunity to win back the closer role. Maybe in spring training Dave Trembley will give him the chance but I wouldn't bet on that. Everyone keeps mentioning Wagner well I remember seeing it reported that he retired a few weeks ago. So we don't want...

He retired to get more money, not to quit. So, you're right in that he wants more money but not that he wanted to quit.
