Thread: AICN-Downunder: THE BOYS ARE BACK, A SERIOUS MAN, CAPITALISM, AMELIA And 9

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by aintitcool.com
I think, really, the Jolly Roger is the appropriate course of action. AICN-DOWNUNDER The Australian Film Institute Award nominations were announced this week, and it was panacea for the soul of Aussie filmmakers and critics alike (not filmgoers so much, they were busy watching COUPLES RETREAT). This is one of the best lineups we've ever had, with BALIBO, SAMSON AND ...

Where they get to review the movies they are getting months after North America, post Australian box office figures, and announce news that would be in its own non-AICN-Downunder-topic if it was significant in any way. This is not a knock on Australia. But why Australia, out of the 194 countries on this planet that aren't America?

Tom Hardy to play Max Rockatansky "Despite his lack of Australian-ness I think he's a great choice" Latauro for shame. Call yourself an Aussie? Your nations single greatest geek movie icon has just been taken by a pommie best known for playing a gay man called Handsome Bob. And all you can say is 'great choice'. Get some four X down ya, watch some cricket, and take a drive through the ...

Everything that can go wrong for Will Smith, goes wrong in "A Serious Man in Black"

Why, asks Gwai Lo, does Australia get its own column? Basically because I write it. If you look in the Contacts page, you'll see there's an Africa-AICN, Asia-AICN, and Euro-AICN. They don't seem to update much, if ever, and I don't know why that is. But AICN-Downunder is regular because I love doing it, and will always make the time every two-to-three-weeks to put the massive thing together. I ...

I know, I know, Mad Max is an Australian icon and we have so few, we should protect the ones we got. But just on a performance level, Tom Hardy's a brilliant choice for a post-apocalyptic arse-kicker. As a friend of mine pointed out on Twitter, though, proven hard-man (Chopper) and Mad Max obsessee Eric Bana would have a brilliant choice.

not to mention, A Serious Man isn't out yet, and this is one of like 3 reviews I've seen of it so far. so that's pretty cool. plus, Latauro is funny.

A SERIOUS MAN releases on November 19, not February 2010. You know how I made the mistake? I got a press release about A SINGLE MAN. Yes, I am feeling exceptionally foolish right now. But hey, we don't have to wait very long, so that's good news!

It's fantastic. Lots of the regionally specific news and reviews goes right over my head, but Lat is funny and informative, and I often find his reviews amongst the most interesting and useful on this site, even if they're sometimes somewhat later than the American ones.

You're both too kind -- but you also make up about fifty per cent of my readership, so it evens out.

Although now I wish Harry and co. made a more concerted effort to get some coverage for some of the other big film nations, like France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Canada, the UK, Italy, etc. Or by continent, as you pointed out. Surely there are some columnists around the globe with a bit of insider access that would be happy to get the exposure that this site provides. Anyway, sorry if my ...

I'm not an MJ fan. At all. Also, the screening was during A Serious Man, and for me there was zero choice.

Latauro does not exist in this dojo

Latauro, good work on this column - your effort is appreciated. I'm still hoping against hope that Mel might get worked into the new Max movie somehow. And as you say if not Mel, then Bana would have seemed a shoe-in. I'd be very curious to know why Miller's made the choice he has. I'm sure there's already an interesting story in 'the making of FURY ROAD' and the thing hasn't even started to shoot yet....

But as Max would have been particularly cool. Still, even without him a Mad Max reboot from Miller does pique my interest.

I think anyone who appreciates that experience of going to a concert would love it. I complete agree with your 'Capitalism...' review though. I held off on reading it until I saw it over the weekend, and god, all that citizen's arrest bullshit, seriously...lame

To me, what was missing was the ending. The movie (and especially its trailer) seems like it's building towards something really cool and epic, but then the ending kinda falls flat.

A serious Man Delay?
Published (2009-10-31 04:40:00)
Wait , where did you hear that A Serious Man is getting pushed back to Feb? I was really looking forward to seeing that and some local cinemas are already advertising their advance member screenings and their sites all appear to have held onto the 19th as listed release date. Do you have some sort of unfourtunate scoop?
