But all it did was annoy me. I stopped paying attention halfway through. It looks good and has an excellent plot but failed to catch my attention.

Did you see the stage version? Everyone who's seen that loves the film.

Watch the stage show on Youtube. Kiss me, I bleed Last seen: Where the Wild Things Are, 9/10

When you watch the stage version first, the movie is more suspenseful because it's got it's own new shock values and the whole thing feels realistic {even though everyone sings and you know how it ends with better special effects}.

Both stage versions are wonderful I saw the one that was made in 1970's and it blew me out of the water I thought both versions were better then the movie

I felt the same annoyance, but I feel that for all Sondheim music. His rhythm is like nails on a chalkboard to me. The movie itself was alright, and I probably would have enjoyed it on mute.

It could easily have been a silent film the way that Burton filmed it. I love the music in Sweeney Todd. A composer for whom I have a similar "nails on a chalkboard" reaction to is Andrew Lloyd Webber... You're terribly late you know...Naughty! Mad Hatter 3/5/2010

Webber's hit or miss for me. But Sondheim is always wonderful IMO. We're having too good a time today, we ain't even thinkin about tomorrow Public Enemies
