Thread: How would you deal with a pack of coyotes?

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by parabellum
It seems that in the suburbs west of Atlanta, out Douglasville way, a pack of coyotes has been seen roaming around, and have exhibited aggressive behavior. That got me to thinking- let's say there is a wooded park adjacent to your neigborhood, and you walk it's meandering trails each day. Your state laws allow you to carry concealed, and you are armed on your treks. You are aware of the reports ...

Coyotes aren't big. You won't likely have to shoot more than one of them before they scatter, and they are hard to hit as they are small and really quick. I'd say G17 or G19 with a gold dot JHP. I think it would be pretty hard to hit the buggers with a handgun when they were all wound up. If i didn't need CCW, i'd say a 12ga.

I'd stay inside.

We have them around here, on an individual basis havent seen them "Pack Up" but I have seen dogs do it. I have used a S&W 65 3" but I would rather have had my Glock 22 or Sigpro 9mm. Coyotes are not "supernatural" and I will trade flat shooting and mag capacity for excess power of bullet diameter.

I think KevinCW is right, except I would carry a SIG and not a Glock. 9mm is certainly enough for what are essentially medium sized dogs, and I suspect once ...

Seriously...any handgun would be sketchy against a small band of little wild canines in the rare event they'd attack. I shot a rabid raccoon with my 226 once. It wasn't moving that fast, and it still took me 5 or 6 shots to put it down. I'd go with capacity...my G19 with a few 15-rounders.

Shoot the one that looks the bravest. The others will run. They aren't like the north vietnamese army or ants. The gunfire will scare the hell out of them becasue the prey is now fighting back.

Wish I still had my Ruger SP101 .357 but I only have 9mm's, so I'd have my P6 ready to roll with 3 magazines.

If my experience while hunting them is any indication, when you shoot the first one, the others will unass the area with rapidity. Any high capacity 9mm would work well. Typical coyotes weigh 40 pounds or so. It won't take a 10mm to put one down.

I think Glock has the higher cap mags for that though I'd guess after one shot the rest would either scatter or cannibalize the recently deceased... You gonna break out a hand cannon like a G20 on a pack of wild animals, and fire just one shot? Shit, you're gonna be shootin' to slide lock and yellin'...

You must have mean coyotes down south. We have lots of them and their big cousins (wolves) up here and they're not that scary. They run in large packs of 15-20. If they are hungry enough, you might get the first 3 or 4, but his kin folk are gonna have...

Hey, we're talking coyotes. Flavor up the meat with a little OC, and some of those buggers will immediately eat the rest. Those things thrive on fuel that would leave catfish starving.
