Hi,
I am not sure what the problem is but the display on my laptop is freezing once or
twice a day. The mouse still moves by clicks don't work and the power key won't
suspend the computer. In addition the keyboard is dead.
I can ssh in from one of my other computers under a different login and kill
all my processes...but I cannot figure out how to restart the gnome system and
...
have you tried going to text mode (alt+ctrl+f2)? then xkill, xinit, then gnome-session.
but if i were you i would start checking /var/log/messages for any hints to what's going wrong...

The keyboard is dead so switching to an alternate console will not work...
I have ...
well, if the keyboard is dead, and the mouse clicks don't work, I don't see how you are going to restart gnome.
unless you are referring to being able to ssh in and then run xkill and xinit

then init 5.
init 3 doesn't kill X. It just puts you in console mode. You have to kill X explicitly before starting it again. If you don't, you'll get a "X is already running" error.

+1 for init3 and starting manually.
Just adding it wouldn't hurt to:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log |grep ww
Cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log |grep EE
And do a lspci, it'd be nice to know what type of video card card you have and if there are know issues.
