HI
Can anyone tell me if ZMANDS supports having master and media servers
ie: one master server with disk and tape, and another media server with disk an tape ( similar to how netbackup works )
Chris
Backup server for Amanda Enterprise acts as the Media Server as well. i.e. you cannot just run a media server on a separate server independent of the Amanda backup server.
In case the motivation for this architecture is to save on backup server licenses, Amanda Enterprise Server license is no where close to as onerous as a NetBackup server license.
ok Thanks
a few more questions
Can the 2 backup servers be configured to talk together and share resources or are they 2 separate enviroments?
can you manage both from one console ?
Im up against netbackup which can have multiple media server and master servers
The config is
1 master server on production sure with disk staging and tape library
1 server at DR site, ...
Can the 2 backup servers be configured to talk together and share resources or are they 2 separate enviroments? can you manage both from one console ?
Amanda Enterprise is managed via Zmanda Management Console - which is a web based front-end. The two backup servers can be managed from two tabs on a browser. As such the two backup servers don't share resources. They can share a physical ...
Hi there,
i'm using Amanda version 2.5.2p1 running on Linux Suse Enterprise Edition 11. Based on my amanda report,

no i am not i am using a virtual tape
I'm trying to write a script that will ask amanda what tapes have not been used. I've been going through the documentation but so far haven't seen anything too relevant to what I want to do. The script would be set to run as a cron job every 2nd and 3rd Saturday of each month. Any ideas as to how this information could be gleaned from amanda? We do keep a file on hand that lists what tapes are ...

The basic idea is here -- http://wiki.zmanda.com/index.php/How..._Virtual_Tapes . Although that is changing some with the new API's in Amanda 2.6.x, I believe. With the setup you are talking about, I would be inclined to set up 5 virtual tapes on each drive. Have a dumpcycle of 5 so that full backups are distributed across those. Use a tapecycle of 10 (or something just less than 10, say, 8 or 9). If you are backing up multiple machines...
Tanks for the hint on the logs. Unfortunately, there weren't any debug logs that fit with the dates. The problem appears to have been the bit torrent download. As long as there was a record of that on any of the logs through the rotation - I have 14 day recycle time - the estimate failed. Once every one of those had been overwritten, it went back to doing the backups correctly with a combination of incrementals and full back ups. I wish I...
I'm not sure what your server distribution is. All linux distributions have /bin/mail installed. The package is usually called "Mailx". Paddy
Email reports are sent out provided the system can actually send them out. A quick test to determine if this is the case is to try to send yourself an email using the "mail" command on the command-line. If that works, then Amanda should work. After that works, there is a directive you can set in the amanda.conf for the backup set called "mailto". This will cause and email to get sent out after each backup of...
After giving up, taking a breather and re-trying I found the issue. The HP tape library has 2 tape drives, I was talking to drive 2 and it was putting tapes into drive 1. So that brings up a follow-up question.. Does anyone have a working dual tape drive configuration? Thanks -Mike
Caesonia, you've been around the forums for some time now, and on at least one occasion have made comments about the lack of response. Most of the folks answering questions here are Amanda's authors, and our time is limited. Please pitch in, and answer some of the other posts on the forums. You may also want to try the amanda-users mailing list, which has a much wider audience.
I am looking at specifying and setting up a dedicated back up server for clients...(20 back ups spread across 5 accounts) all difficult physical locations... I am looking for an application that will do as much as possible automatically..IE scheduling jobs, copying directories, maintaining attributes etc etc And also that will allow easy recover/restoration of files and directories when requested by clients. Am i looking at the right...
I can put one client in Disklist file and it will backup. When I put other clients in the same file, it fails with the above mentioned error. Thanks, James
I'm configuring amanda-2.6.1p1 on opensolaris from source and it displayed a warning. WARNINGS: no user specified (--with-user) -- using 'amanda' no group specified (--with-group) -- using 'backup' Are the packaged amanda-server, user and group setup as amandabackup?
