Thread: How to approach pedi about getting a gtube?
Started 1 month ago by Satori
I feel like I'm crazy for asking for the tube but seriously, I NEED SLEEP! The older dd gets (she's 3.5 yrs) the more she's nursing at night, she's waking 4-8 times a night and when she's fighting something she nurses all night long. I want the tube for overnight feeds to keep her BS up plus it would be very nice for when she's sick I could run a constant feed to keep her BS up and out ...
Is that the route they'd go if she wasn't nursing? If so, I think it's reasonable. She won't nurse forever, and sleep IS a necessity. I don't know anything about your DD, but if food during the night is necessary, I'd be putting in a tube. Sleep is necessary for HER too. It's normal for babies to wake often to eat, but most 3+ kids aren't waking like that and it's not the thing they're meant...
I can't imagine that it's less exhausting for her than it is for you. Maybe start there -- that you worry about the impact of the interrupted sleep on her development, and want to explore options?
This may sound totally selfish but I never thought about the disruption to her cycles. She's a very light sleeper, I don't even like to move at night because its usually met with her waking a bit and wanting to nurse half the time but she rarely seems to fully wake up unless I tell her no because she's nursed 5 million times in the past hour and I'm going nuts and know she doesn't need it per say...
Well I am seriously not a happy camper right now It appears home health contacted the pedi and asked about getting a gtube with no explanation and the pedi's office just called saying no they don't agree. I explained to the nurse what was going on and that I had just told them YESTERDAY (home health) that I was going to talk to the Dr about it and they took it upon themselves to call her and ...
welcome to nursing. this is the drama I was talking about.
As far as the tube goes, I don't know that they would do it until they had exhausted all the other options (like a bit glass of cornstarch before bed). They'd need to document a whole night inpatient to prove the need. In order to get the port, my son had two life threatening episodes that were observed before it was decided that it ...

I think the pp is right about a hospital stay. I do not know many who would put in a g-tube without proof that it is medically necessary. I do not know your child's dietary restrictions, but is jello OK? When I could not get DS to take meds any other way, I would make jello jigglers and when they were half set, put the sprinkles in the center of the jiggler. I make small ones and he tends to ...
I have no problem with a hospital visit but its really not needed with this dx, its well known these kids can't go more then 3 hours without food.
Anyway, so help me I'm going to try to not rip the woman's head off when I talk to her today. I went to talk to the pedi today and she wouldn't even see me she was so opposed to it so I didn't even get a chance to explain why I wanted to explore ...
It kind of sounds like you're looking at a Gtube as an alternative to night nursing, and that doesn't qualify as medically necessary. I doubt she's going to stop wanting to nurse just because she's getting feeds at night, KWIM? I'd think trying to nightwean might be a better first step than jumping right to a major surgical procedure and medically implanted device.

I have never actually tried this myself though, so I can't vouch for the results I actually did try once, I won't be repeating that again My mom made really good...
yeh, cosleeping with wires and tubing didn't work out for us either. You sleep in a puddle of bile, and no matter how much you scrub that smell is just stuck in your nose for a while. Much less mess when we stopped cosleeping as there was only one of us to disconnect the tubing instead of 4.
Why can't the 3yo have a sandwich at night if she can have them during the day? And what are your plans for when she weans? At 3 she's not going to be nursing a whole lot longer, it's not like you'll be nursing her forever ykwim? How do others with similar metabolic issues handle night feedings? What does your doctor recommend? Going to a tube is a BIG deal, not a matter of convenience. And a tube isn't more...

I don't remember, it was several months ago (maybe a year) when my mom fed her apples thinking it was ok....
I keep coming back to this thread to read the replies, I know nothing about FOD, and very little about g-tubes (just that we're doing everything in our power to avoid one) so I've been learning a lot. My question...why are you approaching the pedi about it? She has a metabolics dr and a GI, right? One of them would be the one to talk to.

I am one of those sound sleepers who could co-sleep through a tube leak. In the AM I would have multiple sets of bile and formula filled clothing, a queen size set of...
I have to say that our g-tube experience was a long time ago, or maybe it's just that sleep was so hard to come by before the tube, that the amount of trouble we had afterwards seemed negligible, but my son used a g-tube overnight from 9 months to 2 1/2 and it just wasn't the huge hassle people seem to be describing here. He slept in bed with me, so I positioned him on the other side of the bed and ran the tube under my body, I...
