According to the Chicago Sun-Times , 90% of murderers in Chicago had prior arrests. If these people were kept in jail, thousands of innocent people would still be alive. Some other interesting facts, more people were killed in Chicago last year than in Iraq and Afghanistan. Only 80% of murders involved a gun, the others were knives, blunt objects or something ...
Chicago also has some of the strictest gun laws, that affect law abiding people , in the country. As a general rule, the states and cities with the more liberal gun laws, have less major crime.

The best research I've read is "More guns, less crime" by John Lott. The title may be a slight variation of that. The Cato institute also has a study that shows the same thing.
