You can do it like a knit cast on only done purlwise. Put you right needle
into the st as if to purl, draw the yarn through, but leave the st on the
left needle and put the new st on there too. Repeat.

Hello! I'm still working on those mittens, and the pattern says to:
knit 5, place next 18 stitches onto a piece of waste yarn (these are the thumb stitches and
will be worked at the end of the piece); turn work and cast on two stitches purl-wise; turn work again
knit to end of round.
I've never cast on purl-wise before, and I can't find clear instructions on how to do this. Has ...
