So with my ODD I know I didn't do the right amounts of tummy time - she had major gastrointestinal issues & mommy was a wimp. However, with this DD I want to make sure I'm giving her enough tummy time since there's no issues. She is 7 weeks old. Anybody know how much and how often I should be doing tummy time? And what other tips do you have (besides not putting her on her tummy immediately...
I've heard that we should aim for at least 10 minutes of tummy time per day. My son loves it, so we do lots more than 10 minutes. He always burps and farts a lot once we lay him on his tummy.... which is great, because I can rarely get a burp out of him after nursing.
I put my DD on her tummy when she's awake and very alert... if she just ate, I usually wait 30-40 min or so. She'll be on her tummy, lifting her head only like 5-10 min at a time before she starts fussing and crying, then I pick her up again and try again later. My ped said to give them tummy time as much as possible... not only will it strengthen them, but help prevent getting a flat head ...
My DD Peds said it doesnt matter...every baby can handle different amounts of time. As long as you are giving her time on her belly, she will let you know when she has had enough. If it was only for like 2 minutes, try again later.
For us it isn't tummy time, it is screaming time, because when I lay Shane on his tummy he does it every time! I try to put him on his tummy as much as possible, but since he sleeps aand eats a lot it is hard to find the time. We get about twenty minutes total of tummy time in per day.
also, if she doesnt tolerate being flat on her tummy, try propping her up with the boppy. she is still buidling muscle, but its not as much pressure on her tummy
Ds likes his tummy time, DD hated hers! Still he only lasts about 10mins before he is done. I usually put him on his tummy every time he is awake. So probably 4-5 times a day for 5-10min at a time. I don't know if there is a set amount of time, but if you are trying for a few mins here and there I think that is good.
If she sleeps on her tummy, does that count?
I put her down in her crib before she's actually asleep so she gets lots of time on her tummy in her crib.
Or does it have to be when she's wide awake and alert to get anything out of it?
She loves her play mat but she's on her back for that and watching all the lights and stuff and talking to them... she loves that!
Maybe I'm not doing ...
When my DD was in the NICU they always had her on her stomach. I asked them why and they said that unless your baby is sleeping they should be on their stomachs. Only turn them to their backs if you are not there with them or they are sleeping. I have a movement monitor which I have under her play mat so I can no if something happens and I let her sleep on her tummy durig the day to.
