Thread: How do YOU pick your next plane?

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by MaxAdventure
What inspires you for a new plane, what do you look for? I mean, short of being irresponsible and just getting everything that looks appealing, how do you decide? My want list/project list just keeps growing. I'm pretty happy with what I have, but if I just had xxxx then it would fill this or that niche. I'd love to hear what others use as deciding factors for their next project. ...

For me, the decission has been very easy for the past year or so. The plane must be electric and must be a parkflyer size: large enough to handle some wind yet small enough to share the space in the trunk of my car with at least two other planes. It must be brushless and Lipo powered. I have batteries in three sizes: 1300; 1800; 2200; so it must use one of these. I've done balsa and won't do ...

[QUOTE=MaxAdventure;660282]What inspires you for a new plane, what do you look for? I mean, short of being irresponsible and just getting everything that looks appealing, how do you decide? I guess you described me in tour first sentence. I have planes ranging from small indoor, to a 9 ½ foot wingspan seaplane, 3d airplanes to 150+ mph nitro deltas. I truly don’t know what grabs me...

My decision is normally based on what I can find laying around or for cheap. Old golf club shafts for fuse, cheap foamy glider wings, correx tailfeathers, then toy bicycle wheels for lg, then what motor, esc, rx and servos have come off previous wrecks. Then a good look at my flying and building skill levels. Sometimes the bust bits box at the LHS comes into it.

With the exception of my Corsair, all my planes have 'picked me'. Sometimes a deal crosses my path, or I find a ebay ad. Sometimes a plane at a swap meet or someone selling something at the field. Sometimes a company gives me something to try, or there is an event where you have to fly something specifically to participate. I dont know, I cant really say I went out and had a want/need ...

Hi Max, I'd say the most important requirement for me is that the new model presents a challenge. Although I've built 2nd "versions" of a certain model, it was because I liked the model so much I wanted another one (usually after a crash!). But overall it's looking for something new, whether it's a new design, a type of model I've never flown before, a different building technique, a new size ...

Hmmm -- I never really thought about it before... The first rule is that I won't rule anything out. After that: There is a 100% chance that my airplane will be "different" (somehow) than everyone else's airplane of the same make and manufacturer. Usually it's different because I start with a GWS slope glider, and customize it myself. Sometimes it could be that I buy a RTF, and repaint it or ...

Some interesting questions, never really thought about it but I would say that my planes pick me. First plane was the HZSC, it picked me because it is such a good trainer. My second plane was the Ultrafly FW190 and after the cub I wanted a low wing balsa war bird and I've always liked the German designs and just happens that Hobby People had this bird on sale at the time. Third plane ...

Money first, what it looks likes, A good review can be handy and my personal "wants" e.g. aerobatic, slow flight, AV, fast ,etc.

Is your car a "Speed-T"? If so, let it be known that I've been wanting to purchase one for over a year now. I have a bit of sticker shock when it comes to the cars -- I don't understand why they're so darned expensive when compared to our airplanes!

Max is correct on heat forming. A heat gun will test your patience, but there are two types of plastic that respond very well: your normal 2 liter soda bottle and the amber tinted apple cider bottle. How do you get the bottle to sit tight? It has to overlap the mold. You essentially melt the back end of the bottle to the mold (it's a good idea to use vaseline or other release agent prior to all of this). Once you have a tight fit on the...

Ok, so I have officially retired my Funtana Clone FFF and as I always do... I now will replace it with another model. The way I picked this next one was, I knew I wanted something more stable I could use as a key chain video camera platform. I needed something less edgy and more stable in flight. Something that was a pusher, so I don't record the prop in flight and have to look at the interference it causes. What I found falls just into...

This sounds a lot like what goes through my head at times - so, are you renting a storage unit for planes, or what do you do with existing models as you add new ones? LOL! Well, Max, it does get crowded at times! But I have given planes away, especially after I try upgrading a particular type. When I got into more advanced gliders I gave my rudder/elevator ones to new flyers (except my favorite, an Olympic) and all my trainer planes were...

Is the Rustler nitro as well? It was totally unintentional, but I completely stopped driving my RC car when I got back into planes. I find them quite a bit more interesting, and they don't need nearly as much routine maintenance. Plus they're fun to build, and I can more easily justify a large number of planes than a large number of cars; the cars always seemed too similar to each other.

Well for me it all started 2 years ago when a mate took me flying one lunch time and I was hooked, as for the process I go through in deciding what to buy: 1). Always electric, nice a clean and fly anywhere...almost 2). Less than 1.1meter wingspan due to size of car 3). Power plant in the 2-3 cell lipo range, i hold 2S1800, 3s1500 and 3s2200 4). I am also one of thse people who enjoy the build as much as the flying, so all planes are ARF or...
