Thread: How do I remove the background from this image?

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by nick h.
I just want to chop off the light grey area around the letters. Can't see how to do it in Paint or Irfanview. Please don't tell me I have to learn Gimp or similar?

What you want to do is use the magic wand to select the outside grey part, and then cut it. This is not hard but it isn't something you can do with Paint, though any actual graphics program will do it (including the GIMP, which is not actually difficult to learn in itself; it's the techniques that can be difficult and they're difficult whatever you use). e.g.

So is it hard to get the border straight? Why does it look so lumpy?

FridgeMagnet replied 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Because the border *is* lumpy, if you judge by colour; the grey part is all mottled grey and black, including the edges. If you want the border non-lumpy, you have to chop bits off it to make it straight. (You could just do that anyway without using the magic wand tbh.)

Ok...so is GIMP the one to try? I do have Adobe CS4 courtesy of Isohunt, but it's a bugger to install and I won't have enough disk space for a few days.

On reflection I think my favourite is the one you trimmed so that black meets white. Thanks for your help. I think I might do a couple of others for the head badge and seat stays and stuff.

The asphalt texture and reversed colours reminds me of a white line in the road, quite apt for a bike.

The asphalt texture and reversed colours remind me of a white line in the road, quite apt for a bike. This is reworked from your original, but I think that if you lighten the grey of the original by a few tones it will improve the contrast.
