Started 1 month, 1 week ago by Hollyms
I know it's not for the inexperienced. I want to learn as much about it as I can. Anyone have tips?

Re: HELP!!! Separation Anxiety? I rescued Wrinkles about a month ago. He's had some freak out sessions when we left, not destruction, but barking and whining and occasional accidents. This is how we handled it. When we first brought him home, we locked him in a room with his doggie bed and some of our clothes when we weren't home. We tried the crate, but he freaked out, I ...

Re: HELP!!! Separation Anxiety? Crate her, persist, until she adjust to knowing your leaving her temporarily is not leaving her forever. It is a training process she must pass through.

Re: 2 yr old peeing OUTSIDE of crate! If I'm understanding you correctly, he's inside his crate but hiking his leg to pee "through" the crate to the outside? I'm guessing you have an open wire crate like I do for my pups. Just to clarify the picture. How long is he in his crate? How long is he eating/drinking before going in? What sort of activity is he getting before he goes in...

Re: Nipping at feet Thanks for responding. I realized after I posted that I meant "loose leash walking," not heel. I have him on a short leash and reward him for the slack. When he pulls, I change direction (a method I read here and a few other places). He'd gotten pretty good with it, but recently he's been biting my pants legs and barking! Growling, even! It's so ...

Ultrasonic dog bark preventer? I was looking through a drfosterandsmith catalog, and there was a device that looked like a birdhouse that you put outside, and it makes some sort of ultrasonic noise so that dogs stop barking. Has anyone used one of these? It sounds too good to be true. I'm very tempted to get one, as my neighbors have no problem letting their dogs out from midnight ...

Re: Ultrasonic dog bark preventer? I take it you don't have any barking ordinance in your area? Animal control will fix the problem with just a phone call.

Re: Ultrasonic dog bark preventer? The problem I would see with this is that it would also affect your dog. If it causes one dog to stop barking, it also punishes the rest of the dogs.

Re: Ultrasonic dog bark preventer? It could work if the unit has enough power to cause real discomfort for the offending canine. With an advertised 50 ft. range, I'd save my money. BTW, that kind of power (even though beyond the range of audible frequencies) would likely cause discomfort in some people as well.

Re: Help potty training a Newfoundland? I have experience w/ this breed of dog/untrained adults. The only way that I've found to train the adults that were w/ breeders like this is when they "go"...take the poop directly to where you would like them to poop outside.. I use an old dust pan (haha)....keep putting it there... walk them to the poop area when its time to go...when they ...

Dog shut down?

Check her teeth. My understanding is that paps can have a lot of dental problems...it may be initially her excitement overcomes any discomfort but that eventually the ball "hurts" in some way and the miss may be just a sign that she isn't comfortable catching it any more.

Get up 30 minutes earlier and give her a brisk 30 minute walk before you go to work?

Re: A question for Dog_Shrink/Cracker please! Why not all of you that find my comments disturbing simply click on the REPORT icon and have me banned.. It would make it easier on everyone to include me.. Just use some force conditioning on me . I think what I said about people who would rather euth a dog then use compulsion conditioning is a truism regardless of how insulting it might seem. You can silence me but the truth runs rampant even...

That's the perfect scenario to teach boundaries. You didn't have to expend any effort, and it's an aversive stimulus that didn't come from you.

Fire Drill?
Published (2009-12-14 13:58:00)
Guide dogs are trained to, upon hearing a smoke detector, head to their owner, wake them up if needed, then guide them safely outside the house. But that's training. I don't know what a dog would do in case of fire.

How do you feel about tug of war?

It is as everyone here has sadi, a GOOD GAME. That being said I car pool with someone who was aghast that I played Tug with my dog "Because it makes them aggressive with children.." I tried to explain that it does not.. but you cannot do much with a closed mind. It is what "every dog trainer she ever worked with has said" so obviously and idiot like me can't possibly know different. Closed minds are...

crate training help please

Could it be the height? I have been using some upside oil jugs in the crate to block off part of it. Raven is squeezing herself into the 4''-5'' between them and the top of the crate to sleep. Must get some pictures hosted and let you see.

Vets usually chop back the nails under anesthesia for dogs whose nails have grown very long. Given the risks involved in putting a dog under, I doubt you'd find a vet who will do it as a maintenance procedure. If you do find one, I'd take that as a good reason to find another vet. If the dog's nails are interfering with her ability to walk, by all means have the vet take care of it. It is a medical problem that needs taking...
