Thread: How did you discover your favorite musical?

I'll start. Sorry if it's a little long.
When I was a little kid, I loved to watch TV. I loved Disney, THE WIZARD OF OZ, etc. My favorite Disney movie was CINDERELLA. One day, when I was about three or four, I was looking for something to watch. I opened the video cupboard to look, and one tape caught my eye. It was called: CINDERELLA. This CINDERELLA, however, looked different. The box was ...
I saw a stage production of Carousel when I was a teenager and eagerly sought out the movie version when it was broadcast on tv. This was long before tape and disc.
At some point, however, I heard Jerome Kern's score for Show Boat and fell in love with it. I have the Complete Showboat (1929, 1936, 1947) on laser disc and keep hoping it will eventually be released on dvd or blu ray.
I also...
I always say that my favorite musical is Les Miserables . If that's the case, my cousin heard that I was starting to like Broadway musicals, so she gave me the cd and told me to listen to it. I kept putting it off; finally, one year while wrapping Christmas presents, I put the CD in for background music. I was horrified. I don't believe that I made it through the entire show; I finished wrapping...
These message boards, ironically enough! There was a thread on here years ago asking people to choose which musical theatre song described their lives at the moment, and person after person kept saying "Still Hurting" from The Last Five Years. So I bought the CD and only listened to that song for a long time, until I became sick of it and started to listen to the rest of it. Well worth my while, ...
hmmm I don't really have anything interesting like that. My favorite musical is probably "Girl Crazy" with the music by the Gershwin Brothers. I discovered it when I checked out a CD of the 90s reconstructed version with Lorna Luft. Listened to it practically every day for months.
Did I not love him, Cooch? MY OWN FLESH I DIDN'T LOVE BETTER!!! But he had to say 'Nooooooooo'
Not a very interesting story for me. My favourite is 'Chicago', and I discovered through a friend who told me how good it was. So I watched the movie, fell in love with it, bought the soundtrack then went to see it on stage when it came near me.

Take that, space coyote!
... and how did you like CHICAGO on staged compared to film? ... both enjoyable in my book .. saw it on stage first.
Brace yourselves for a whole lotta ugly comin' at you from a neverending parade of stupid.
I went to see an A Level Performing Arts piece at my college, one of the songs they used was "Money, money" from Cabaret and it was performed amazingly, I had the song stuck in my head for the rest of the day.
When I got home I googled the lyrics and this came up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkRIbUT6u7Q
It had only been uploaded about a month ago then and I fell in love, I went to Amazon ...
I always say, as a general rule, that 'Phantom' is my favourite musical. It was the second musical I ever saw (after 'Les Mis') and at the time I saw it (and for quite a few years after) I identified a lot with the story and ever since whenever I have heard a song from it or been to see it again it has been a hugely evocative and emotional experience for me.
Anyhow I discovered it simply by ...

See if I had to pick, if I absolutely HAD to pick, I would actually take the film. As an actor myself I do appreciate Brechtian approaches to theatre, but it's not really how I like my theatre, I prefer to be emotionally engaged with the characters rather than alienated from ...
Fiddler on the Roof - The one show that turns me into a slobbering cry baby! Brace yourselves for a whole lotta ugly comin' at you from a neverending parade of stupid.

Cabaret. i first saw the movie, then went to see a professionally staged production in Vancouver. I simply fell in love. I had never been affected so much by theatre as i was that night. For me it's the perfect synergy of dance, book and song in a show. Revenge is a dish best served cold.
