Thread: How can it be this slow? :: AOL :: think broadband

OK I know this forum is dead, but please tell me, how it can be that it took me 30 mins to post this message because it takes minutes at a time for a single web page to load if it loads AT ALL.
I sync at 2Mbit but my download speeds range from 10KB/s to 50KB/s on a good day. Currently I'm experiencing around 0.001KB/s. It's even very bad at 4am, when I thought there would be few ...
Hi,
Im on AOL as well and I dont have the speed problems you are experiencing... Can you post your line stats at all?
I find at about 5.20 every day my connection slows for the evening the worst ive seen it is 100k but on average i get 0.5meg in the evenings- during the day i get the full speed my line can handle which is about 2.5 meg.
AOL Broadband (home)
Be ...
DownStream Connection Speed 2336 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps
that's all I have, the router doesn't seem to tell me line stats
I also want to know how they can advertise it as unlimited when they throttle during the day limiting your speed, throttle certain types of traffic limiting what you can do with it, and penalise you if you download what they consider too ...
I don't think there is anything wrong with the filter. I can't see why it would suddenly break. And sometimes the connection is fine.
I think there may be a problem with the router though. It is old and gets hot, I have found that turning it off for 5 mins can help.
I found the line stats:
Connection Speed 2368 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 60 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin...
Did you get yourself sorted out?
MAC must be handed out within 5 days or they are breaking the rules, that is unless they have fully unbundled you in which case no MAC is available.

Is there not a quirk with AOL which requires the MTU to be set at something like 1400? That could maybe account for slow loading web pages. Hope that is of help.

MTU for AOL is 1450 .

Filters do sometimes stop working for no reason, it's happened to me. I'm not sure if you can get an intermittent fault though (unless there's a loose wire?). If possible, try a different router and filter....
I see it's slow again this evening, having randomly not been slow for the last few evenings. As always, speed checks show that the slowness is only really occurring with servers based abroad (particularly the USA). Testing the speed to a UK server gives full speed! Clearly an issue with the AOL servers...

Well now we have a bit of a quandry dont we, the CPW version of AOL help is still showing the original 1400 for the MTU. LINK
If you have a NTP master socket undo the 2 screws and pull out the lower plate. Plug the router and a none cordless phone via a filter into the test point. Check you speed now. If high you have an internal problem (your problem) if the speed is still slow it is down to your ISP via BTW. Is your line noisey - press 1 to clear the DT (dial tone) and listen, if you can hear noise the problem ...

How geeky is it that I'm narrowing down my places to live by possible broadband speeds? Damn this slow UK broadband system.
