I was running errands earlier and noticed Home Depot and Lowes right across the street from each other which I find kind of amuzing but just wondering which one do you prefer?
Local hardware first, Home Depot second, Wal-Mart never. As far as Lowes goes, I can never get any help at Lowes; always at Home Depot and they seem to know what they are talking about
Lowes seems to be less crowded when I go in but both have real helpful people working there. I notice more contractors at Home Depot. If I am in a hurry I go to Lowe's because my Home Depot gets too crowded especially mornings and weekends when the builders take over
Reminds me of yesterday when I saw a Pepsi truck and a Coca-Cola truck parked eerily close to each other. I was waiting for an epic battle to ensue.
Alas it did not.
Rona, Home Hardware, Local places, then the others if it is an emergency. IMO there is almost never a reason the shop at Home Depot or Lowes, they both suck and you can find anything at those places somewhere else, usually cheaper, with better service and free delivery. At far as contractors go, I don't know a single one that would go to either place for ANYTHING, no service and the lumber ...
Home depot, but only because I know where four of them are within a 15-20 mile radius of my apartment with the closest about 5 minutes away. The closest lowes I know of is at least a 45 minute drive. There's also a local hardware store right around the corner from my place, but it's only open 8-5 mon-fri and until noon on saturday. I realize they're probably catering to contractors or people ...
Lowes for me... Unless they don't have what I need, then I cross the street and go to Home Depot. Only 'cause our Lowes is bigger than our Home Depot. I figure if you're going "big box" may as well go for the bigger of the boxes.
For years our neighborhood had a "Do It Center". Then Sears Hardware went into the strip-mall diagonally across the corner.... Couple years later, Home Depot ...

Some of the shady drywall contractors in this area buy all their supplies from HD. All the drywall supply houses reported to this goverment...
For hand tools, I go to Sears. Craftsman hand tools are good quality, and they have a lifetime warranty. Would I like a garage full of Snap-On? Sure. But I don't have that kind of money. For lumber, I go to my local lumber yard. It's generally cheaper than Home Depot or Lowes, but not by much. I go there for the quality. At one time, I seriously went through every 1X3 piece of pine that one Home Depot had, probably around 120...
i guess it depends on what i'm looking for...not many independant shops near me...lately i've been going to lowes cause its newer than my home depot. More of the workers are still happy to be there...home depot seems depressing at times. Price also varies depending on what i'm buying.

I have 3 of each within 20 minutes, so I tend to know which one is good for what. Also, Lowes has these 10% off coupons at the US post office for people that relocate in a new home package.....while remodeling our house, we have moved 721 times....shhhhhhh
