Gosh - I had to check where you lived when you were talking about spring! Your post is so wonderful. I'm getting my knee done at the being of Nov. (our winter) and figure even in southern California it is a good time to be "recovering".
I am really pleased that I had my knee done in Autumn. I was able to get around in skirts and 3/4 pants for the first few weeks while my scar was healing and then of course once winter set in I was quite happy to be indoors and resting rather than enjoying all the great activities that summer makes available. I am now at the point where I am much more active as spring unfolds and I can start to ...
Hi Fantail
Good to hear you are doing well. I had a TKR on 6/12/09 in NYC and live here in the States, I decided on the spring so I could go walking and get around once I was able and that worked for me.
As for the weeding... ask your surgeon about kneeling on the new knee, I heard from a friend it can be painful.
as a suggestion, he uses a firm piece of 4 inch thick foam padding to kneel ...
I just wanted to say, that it took me a whole year to quit limping really bad.It feelt like my hip just was not in place.I still limp when the weather is bad or I am tired. I also had a thr right side in Dec.05 and I am 53yrs old and a female. So Hang in there.
Lots of PT to strengthen and stretch is crucial after THR. I started intense therapy at 2 1/2 months with my first hip using machines and went to a facility where the therapists had lots of experience with joint replacement patients....which is also very important. My OS wrote a script for 12 visits (limited by my insurance)...which I spread out over a period of time, 2 x per week. Then, after...
Hi Michael....
You mention still being sore. Where? In the groin, thigh, at the incision site? Have you mentioned the soreness to your surgeon? Sounds like some inflammation.....more than likely from an uneven gait. Do you have a leg length difference?
Our muscles have to be re-taught and strengthened and stretched after THR....after months and possibly years of limping. There are...
I broke my tibia, right below the knee, and they inserted a metal plate and 16 screws to keep it together. Although no broken bones or anything were found in my foot, I just lost all the movement and my foot is stuck in tippytoe position. Because I broke that ankle 10 years ago, doctors just said it was arthritis from that. Now I'm unable to walk on it and my options are either keep the foot ...
I've recently become aware of news of deteriorating plastic implants, due to radiation sterilizing procedures, prior to surgery. Apparently, only Johnson and Johnson prostheses are involved. Since I've got a J&J inside, I'm wondering if anyone can offer information regarding this claim.
Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about paralabral cysts.
I'll explain my situation. Almost 4 months ago, I slipped and fell and apparently fractured my hip. I put up with the pain for a long time, then saw my family doctor, who told me to take ibuprofen and that it was probably bursitis. I persisted and saw an orthopedic doctor, who ordered an MRI.
The ...
i was born with a dislocated hip which left me with one leg shorter then the other ...what is the best shoe lift although heel lift alone is no good thankyou..
When I went to a rolling cane from the walker, was when I began to have back pain. It was on the side where I leaned on the cane, so I wondered if the pressure was doing it. When I was getting around the house without any aid, the back pain eased up. I did find that a heating pad, when I was sitting, helped the back --- also a good smear of Tiger Balm at night. I also got shoulder pain when I used a low chair or the regular toilet -- not the...
Aha - I have one original knee that I use to kneel on to get back up. Before the surgery it was in a terrible state, but has improved immeasurably since, now it doesn't have to do all the work. Sometimes I just use my forearms, almost like doing a pushup to get vertical. It does give me a lot of pleasure to be able to do it, even if it isn't very elegant. Went for a picnic recently and was so good to know I could just get down on the...
Hi: With all my surguries for whatever (2 were GYN electives and 2 were hip replacements) I have awakened from whatever anesthetic was used and it seemed like no time had passed! (The GYNs were non-spinal anesthesia). I am not sure whether I had spinals or epidurals for the 2 hip replacements - I think mine were probably spinals but the theory is similar I believe. I looked it up on the Internet and there is a difference. (Anesthetics also do...

It also occurs on occasion while walking...but it's very sporadic. The stairs are my biggest problem. There is no swelling, nor any...
Try massaging your knee for 5 minutes before going out to a restaurant. And sit in a way that you can drag another chair over and elevate your leg. I carry a little pillow with me for just that purpose and get a table where I can sit out of the servers' way. Just remember to get up after an hour and walk around a bit--to the restroom or whatever. Otherwise you'll be very stiff when it's time to leave.
First.. I did the knee injections first. I'm 58 had torn my ACL about 15 years ago and went through reconstruction but over the years my arthritis in that knee just got worse and worse.. the injections didn't hurt at all.. my ortho wanted me to try that before going ahead with the TKR. First one helped a bit but after that no change. Had my TKR on the 15th of October.. and I'm 7 weeks post op and feeling great. Using a cane when...
I had an epidural with sedation also. After having had a general in the past, I can tell you this is the way to go. I have had nausea and vomiting after a general too, but with the epidural, nothing like that. I did not hear anything, and I woke up gently, was drowsy in recovery, and hardly remember anything. The epidural or a spinal will keep you comfortable for several hours after surgery too. I was totally happy with my anesthesia, and if I...
Great News Silver Swan! It has been almost 4 weeks since my THR on 11/11. I'm feeling good. I use just a cane; but hopefully will be cane free by Christmas. I started driving last week without any difficulty. My greatest accomplishment to date is walking up and down stairs step over step. The best part is walking pain free!

My surgeon said he doesn't like general because it takes too long to get out of your system and they want you up that day or next morning worst case. Will admit I had the same concerns about what if I could hear something, feel something, etc. All concerns...
