Thread: Himrod and Watkins Salt Mines

Started 1 year, 10 months ago by bob_suruncle
Wondering if anyone can fill me in on the history of the salt mine at Himrod? I believe it was operated by Morton Salt but dont know when it opened. I understand it closed in the 70's. Also interested in any historical images of the plants at Watkins for modeling purposes. I plan on heading down there late spring and will try to visit the archives if they are open... unfortunately I ...

The mine at Himrod opened in the early 1970s. Will check some photos this weekend and edit this post with more precise info. Had time this date to go through my photo files. Took a photo of the Himrod salt mine on 04 November 1972. The mine was not yet open but construction was almost finished at the time. In the photo is Alco RS1 number 101 which was the mine switch engine. The unit was ...

Seems that the government, either state or federal, shut the mine down account water quality problems. Am sure that they were not yet shipping salt by rail in late 1972. Very possible that trucks were being used, however. And yes, the mine was not open for very long. _________________ You can't go home again- Thomas Wolfe

There were some people that reported that it was getting to exspensve to seperate the shale that was mixed in with the salt. Together with water quality and the mine being close to a lake that was formed by a glacer millions of years ago these 2 problums would or could have doomed the mine from the vary start? It could be possable that maybe that the shaft(s) were not deep enough to avoid these ...

I believe that the D&D contract refers to production related buildings. I had assumed that would include the warehouse but your earlier comment caused me to think that it may survive this round since it could be used for some other purpose. On the other hand, it has been neglected for all these years just like everything else and it might cost more to bring it back rather than tearing it down and building new. IMO, they should clear...

Anyone been down near the Morton salt Mine, what was scheduled to be tore down is just about finished. The local fire chief was told that nothing else is planned to be torn down at this point from Morton Salt officials from Silver Springs, the ones responsible for oversight of that property if that's what you want to call it.

Every underground mining operation leaves the equipment in the mines when the equipment gets old/brakes down or when the mine simply closes down for one reason or another so why are you worrying about it?? These big companies got lots of money to...

Two NS six axle units, one in CR blue. Could have been a third out of my sight as well. Were north of the tracks into the plant by half a mile or so. Just happened to be looking the right way from 14 while passing by - I presumed they were laying over because we'd just passed Finger Lakes going south and I assumed he had the track all the way to Himrod. Hoppers were apparent at the end of the lead into the plant, too.

I can hypothesize what the plant looked like in the 50's as it probably hasnt changed significantly over the past 50 years but there was a Y out in front of the plant and I would assume some of that metal siding wasnt there...

Of course Hurricane Agnes delat the final blow to that line. But imagine Brooks, when I witnessed PC - GP-38, of all things switching Birkett Mills and going up to Carey Lumber. The power came out of Geneva to work the line. From Dresden to Penn Yan was up hill raising about 720 feet in six miles. Not bad. But, I interviewed Lou Potts, who was in his 90s in the 70s, when I worked at WFLR (Freakin Lousy Radio). He was a conductor on the line...

Do you have any recollections of PC Trains on the Dresden - Penn Yan Branch, or moves north of Penn Yan to Bellona? BWP _________________ Brooks W. Parker Pennsylvania Railfan Co-Moderator
