Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by APlusRemodeling
ok so im a new cougar owner. I picked it up cheap and the only thing it needs is a clutch. im a mechanic and have worked on fords and all cars. Used to work at a trans shop. So thought this would be a piece of cake. Well I am at the part of pulling the subframe off and I want to do it without taking out the steering rack. I have the main 2 bolts off and 3 of the little bolts for the cover. ...

If you take out the rear subframe bolts, and loosen the front ones it will allow it to drop down enough to get to those bolts easier. Make sure the tie rod ends are tied up in the wheel wells to hold the rack, and be sure the front and rear roll resistors are removed before you unbolt the rack. That being said, here's a how-to I had typed up for a member awhile ago. Hope this helps....

I updated that a bit Mich, depending on which thread you pulled it from.

I typed that up for Mellott quite awhile ago, and usually go through and change something every time I post it

yeah. I was using those instructions from when I pulled them up for help. But I tried pulling it down a little but barely comes down. Maybe because of the rear motor mount or trans mount. I didnt see that attached to the subframe but maybe it was. Ill have to check tommarrow. I dont understand why they made it so hard to get these transmissions out. Iv done a lot of trans installs and this ...

Oh, you definitely need to remove those front and rear roll resistors, they are attached to the subframe. It will come down a few inches if the rack is still there. As far as removing the rack with it, I *think* just the lines are all you need to pull, but don't quote me on that. Hopefully AirCougar 1 will chime in as that's how he does it. I leave the rack in the car.

yeah I prefer to keep the rack up. But if Im going to go through hell trying to keep it up there then Im better off taking it off. Thanks for all the help. Although Im super tired now I cant wait to get at it tommarrow.

These are road course cars. They suck on the drag strip.

thats a normal clutch kit, they don't come with flywheels. any local machine shop should be able to resurface the flywheel. I think ultra rev sells the light weigh flywheels. it also seems that you can order a luk flywheel from your local parts store too.
