Thread: Help ! Kernal panics!!!

Started 1 month ago by Brian Drachman
A have a g5 running tiger. Has worked for many years. Only problem I occasionally noted over last 6 months is that rarely, the computer would freeze (without a Kernal panic warning) and then the fan would start running at maximum speed continuously until I shut off the machine Now, all of a sudden, as soon as I log into any of the accounts (even root), I get a kernal panic ...

Hi Brian, First, how much free space on your HD? Have you inspected the interior for dust buildup? Have you booted off the Install Disk by holding the d key down at boot-up, (not the c key), and run the extended Apple HW Test? Some Install disks require holding the Option key at bootup to select the AHT. Some Macs came with separate AHT CDs. If that turns out OK... "...

I have 7.5 gig left on the drive I tried tech tool deluxe. All hardware passed. I used disk utility from the CD. Repaired the hard drive and repaired permissions I reset the pram. Still, no go. kernal panic as soon as I get to the log on screen. G% 2.3...

I tried tech tool deluxe. All hardware passed. Sorry to report, but bad RAM rarely shows up on a RAM test. Do you have say a Firewire drive to Install to & boot from for a test?...

Since my last post, I did a complete reinstall of the system. While setting up the new user account, I had 2 kernal panics. This seemed to happen when I had an external firewire drive connected. Now, perhaps by chance, with the drive disconnected I am doing so far so good. (but I had the drive disconnected last night and kept getting kernal panics anyway.)-----> Suspect I have a ...

How does it do in Safe Mode, (holding Shift key down at bootup)? That presses the HW less & uses some simpler drivers....

I think I found the problem. I brought the computer into the apple store. They are running diagnostics on it. They "think" it is the hard drive. However, I then plugged in my kids old G4 into the network this morning. Guess what. Kernal panics on startup. I realized that 10 days ago, I bought a new airport extreme. I turned it off and no more kernal panics. I reconnected my ...

Wow Brian, thanks for the report, do let us know the final outcome please!

Problem solved. 1) Apple store found no hardware issues with the G5 2) They could duplicate the problem with my airport extreme in the store. Same thing happened with the another airport extreme in the store. 3) Went back to my belkin router. No kernal panics on my g5 (or the G4); looks like the new airport extreme is the problem. Incompatible with both of my older apple ...

Help ! Kernal panics!!!

Since I got rid of the AE, and went back to my old belkin router (1 week ago), no kernal panics. With the AE, I had panics on both my G5 that came with an Airport card, and my g4, which used a third party card. I will also tell you that the mac lead tech at the store said my kernal panic was an I/O problem....ie the hard drive. Obviously not the case G% 2.3   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Interesting. I bought a new iMac and Airport Extreme on Thursday and had my old PPC G5 (Tiger) running next to it while I migrated the HD content. After the software was loaded, I set up the AE, and then started configuring both computers for the new AE. No problems with the new iMac, but almost immediately I began to experience kernal panic shuts on my old iMac. This drove me around the bend as I was using the old machine to replace an even...

This is quite interesting as I am researching a problem one of our employees has with kernal panics on there 10.4.11 12" G4 iBook which has apparently just been happening the last couple of days. Guess what, I swapped out our dome shaped airport extreme to the new square one within the last couple of days, could be coincidence..... MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.6.2)

Have had same problem with new Time Capsule. Newer Macs work fine. Older iMac panics when I log on to network. Have performed procedures prescribed for kernal panic as well as having hard drive reformatted and hardware checked at Apple store. Still not working. Assume its problem with airport in Time Capsule. Do I need new Time Capsule or do I need new Mac. Mac Book   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
