Thread: Help! Dvd repair instructions???

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by LauraBella
Hello~ I've somehow trashed the 2nd disc of my beloved A&E Pride and Prejudice miniseries. I need to fix this! I also have a couple workouts that I've purchased used that are some bit scratchy.... I know someone suggested polishing with toothpaste? Does that work? Can you give me instructions as to how to do that? Any other instructions? Does this work equally for CD's ...

I'm no help but I LOVE that movie/series. (Yesterday was cold and rainy and blustery here...I got both my kids settled at nap time and I curled up in bed and watched the first part of this! )

I've never tried the toothpaste thing because, while it is abrasive it would be fairly hard to control whether or not you were too abrasive and just made things worse I think. I have a device called a disc doctor that my parents bought for me years ago for about 30 dollars. Even though I am incredibly careful with my DVDs and CDs, it has paid for itself many times when I have traded, ...

I'm normally very careful, too! But, "something" has happened. Sigh. I tried ebay to see if perhaps someone was trying unload the second disc on it's own. No luck. I'll have to buy a new one if I can't fix it. I do love Mr. Darcy so! Thanks for the disc doctor link!

Do you have a membership to a local, brick and morter, DVD rental place? I'm thinking places like Hollywood Video or Blockbuster would have such a device and you might be able to have them run your DVD through it for a few dollars.

Take the disc to a dvd/cd resale shop. They provide this service. I had good results with a computer software disc. The charge was minimal (around $2.00)

It freezes and looks pixilated in about three scenes. ...

All I have to say is, you must get that disc fixed! I've been watching the 2nd one last night/this morning and it's the best part (IMO) b/c it has the most Mr. Darcy scenes!!!

When my DVD's freeze like this, I just wash them with water and wipe them dry with a soft cloth. I've noticed that the DVD's I get from the library are doing this a lot, and washing them with plain water seems to do the trick. HTH Deb

i use the toothpaste trick and it works pretty well. the first few times i did it though, i think i made more scratches on the dvds. this is what i do now: i use a plain white toothpaste (no gel), squeeze out about 2 inches of toothpaste onto the disc, rub it in circular motion all over the disc. wait about 15 mins and rinse in warm water. then dry it with a soft towel. the cleaned disc is much shinier and has fewer scratches.

I have Skip Doctor that I bought from Radio Shack. It has worked quite well for me for the DVDs I get from trades / trade store that have seen better days. I've revived at least 5 DVDs that wouldn't play through when I first got them, and even one or two CDs. I'm not crazy about the radial pattern that gets left behind on the shiny side, but I don't really get into the post-process buffing that you're supposed to do,...
