Thread: Help! Deck rental ends Monday, and I can not export to tape...
Started 2 months ago by Frankiejmovies
I am trying to export my movie to tape from FCP to the sony dsr-1500. I started to export, and made the mistake of stopping to go back and see if it worked. Now I have time code on about 3 minutes of tape, and the deck will no longer record on the tape. How can I erase\fix the time code issue, so that I can record to this DVCAM tape? Thanks....
that's my question exactly... how do I erase the sony master tape... I do not have a camera... all I have is the sony dsr-1500 deck, and it can not be controlled by FCP. So I have to find a way to erase the tape with the deck itself.

You'll need a bulk eraser, which is basically a large magnet to "erase" info from the tape. I can't imagine that you have one. They never work that well with videotape anyway.
What I can't get at is why your deck won't record once you've recorded something on it. It should. You should be able to rewind, hit play+record and go forward from there. Can you explain a little more ...
Thanks for your reply! I have about 1 min 44 sec of video on the tape currently. When I rewind and try to record over it, the deck stops recording as soon as it reaches 1 min 44 sec. I'm guessing because it is seeing a break in time code. So I can record over what is there already, but it will not continue recording into the remaining part of the blank tape. Unfortunately, I do not ...
what mode is your deck in, local or remote? You should just be able to set it in local and then hit play+record and then let final cut output your video. If the two aren't directly connected and the deck is only recording what it "sees" then I think that might help. Also, are you using "Edit to Tape" or "Print to Video".
Try using "Print to Video" if you aren't already and just play...
Hi -
If there is nothing on that tape that you want to save, then:
Rewind the tape to the head.
Load the sequence you want to output on the timeline.
Make sure you have no in or out points on the sequence.
Click on the sequence in the bin.
Menu File > Print to Video
A dialog box will open that lets you choose to add some black before your sequence and after your sequence, etc....
I have the deck in local, because I can not control it in remote mode.
The problem is not the firewire connection, or FCP not outputting the video.
I am "printing to video"... I can not "edit to tape", because I can not control this deck in FCP.
The problem is with the tape itself, having 1:44 of footage on it already, and the deck will record over it, but not past it. Once it...
Thanks Meg... I have been doing exactly what you instructed, but while it will record over the old 1:44 of footage, it stops recording at 1:44. I think because it senses a break in time code. How can I get past this issue?

as much as i don't recommend this, you could record black from the deck onto the tape in control track mode and create a new control track. The reason it might be stopping is because there could be a lack of a control track and it doesn't know what to do.

Hi -
2 questions:
1) Why can't you use edit to tape?
2) How long is your sequence?
Thanks

Thanks for all your help... I read, and drop frame is what I need... I set both to drop frame... one last question... If it does not work... and I black out entire tape, is that going to effect the quality once I record over the black? Or should I just wait until I have a new tape? Thanks for everything iMac\ 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo\ 2 GB SDRAM Mac OS X (10.5.6)
You'll be fine just using the same tape. Those tapes canhandle that. The advise not to reuse tapes is mainly about tapes that were camera tapes. They have usually being rewinded many times in the camera and different decks. Your tape was only in1 deck trying to record a film. Really, you'llbe fine. Curious about if this all works out. I'm sorry, I don't understand, aren't you using firewire to output your timeline to the deck? If you are, you should be able to control the deck If you open the Edit to Tape window and do not get control of the deck, do...
I actually mean record black from the deck without the use of the computer. Just hit play+record like you were recording from a source but there is no input to the deck. Like I said, not a great idea, but it might help Mac Pro Dual 2Ghz Mac OS X (10.5.6) 2.5 GB RAM, 640GB Storage
