Thread: Harry Potter and Religion

So, I have a friend who is a Jehovahx92;s Witness, and shex92;s sort of weird when it comes to Harry Potter. I have heard of really religious Christians who are against HP and I still have no idea why. My friend a big fan of movies, but whenever we mention HP, itx92;s very uncomfortable because she shuts down immediately with a x93;I canx92;t watch HPx94; or something like that. So does ...

Basically throughout the bible, anything to do with paganism was a major sin against God. Leviticus 19:31: Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 20:6 I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut him off from his people....

It's incredibly sad that more EVIL has been done in the name of the Christian God than has ever been done by pagans and/or Goddess based religions. I say it all the time, I have nothing against Jesus Christ, it's his psycho, sadistic followers I can't stand. If given the choice to be the shepherd or the sheep... be the wolf.

I agree. Just look at the Salem Witch Hunt trials. And many other acts of violence that have been done throughout history in His name.

I fully concur. As George Carlin said, "More people have been killed in the name of God than for any other reason." Even in the Bible itself, God commands Israel to wipe out nonbelievers, and Deuteronomy 13:13-17 says to destroy any town where you are being told to worship false gods. It's interesting that the fundies are railing against Harry Potter as being Satanic, but not the Tolkien ...

I can't think of Lord Voldemort w/o mentioning the Sin of Pride. It drives him (and the same could be said of his DE's) to murder, framing innocents, and his thirst for power. But pride also proves to be his undoing. The Dark Lord's mistakes are mind-boggling to say the least. Pride is the match that starts the fire. It is the reason for Voldemort's first fall from power and the cause of his ...

My mother is a fundamentalist Christian, almost a stereotype of one. She doesn't believe in evolution, and she didn't even like "My Little Pony", when I was little, because there was too much magic in it. For a while, she was a bit iffy about HP as well. But after I've told her a lot about the books, she doesn't seem to mind them so much anymore. Yes, it's true! IMDB has reached Sweden!

Religios don't mind porno or violence, but they certainly don't like straw brooms. I guess straw brooms are a tool of the devil. Four out of five doctors agree that I am actually hot!! ;)~~

Just to start with, I'll say that I'm a Christian who loves the Harry potter books and films. My parents, who are also Christians, would freak out if they knew I'd read them. I find it somewhat difficult to pinpoint the exact problem that many Christians (and people of other religions) have with Harry Potter. It could simply be that they are offended by the inclusion of magic, but with the ...

I know, but she doesn't want to hear about the scientific evidence. Believe me, I've tried telling her about them, and it's like talking to a wall. I wouldn't call her "a fool" though. Some people just choose to not believe in evolution (even though most of them live in the US, and there are very few of them here in Sweden), because it goes against their faith, and we have to respect that. Yes, it's...

Yeah. The statewide German competition was always interesting, too, since it took place on Friday and Saturday. He always had to stay somewhere within walking distance of the college campus it was being held on, and someone had to go up during the awards ceremony and get his awards for him, since they were considered "gifts," which cannot be received on the Sabbath, apparently. I remember one time he just kind of had to stay...

Also remember that HP takes place in THIS universe. And it suggests that all the Witch-burnings shouldn't have been done. Witchcraft, in this Universe, is a Black Art. I don't think the Bible differentiates between good witchcraft and bad. It's all Black. The New World fell not to a sword but to a meme.

True, and if you consider all the muggleborn witches and wizards (such as Lily or Hermione) who have been brought into the wizarding world since then, they've probably still got some kind of knowledge of modern muggle religion whether they practice it or not. Even if they practice some kind of wizard religion, or even their own form of the older so-called pagan religions, like druids or wiccans.

Jeez...that's sounds even more strict than my friend's religious limitations, and not by a small margin either " You will not forget this devil's power.... AND YOU ARE NOT WORTHY AS MY OPPONENT "

It also says "Do not practice divination or sorcery" (Leviticus 19:26). Besides, really I think the problem is more than simply it heavily features magic, but Christians are worried that it will lead children to become interested in practicing magic themselves, and turn to the occult.
