He still has a player option that he can pick up.

Expected to pick up the player option today.

Expected to pick up the player option today.     Sox then buy him out and kick him to the street. His career is over.

I have an irrational hatred for George Kottaras, so if it's between him and Varitek for back up C, give me Varitek.

Getting on base at a 313 clip isn't really sufficient for C, let alone DH or 1B.    He is a brilliant base stealer, he gets on and realizes there is no chance he's going to steal, so he stays put.     He has a .344 career OBP, not .313 and his SB/CS ratio is excellent but thanks for playing.     And Hank Aaron averaged about 40 HR's/year.    I doubt he can still do that.     I think this thread has been beaten to...

I know... that was pretty bad.   maybe anger was the wrong word....  And...  the Varitek bashing continues....    ok,i'm sorry. No more Varitek bashing. You know this comes from me just not liking the guy.     Understood.  Maybe you should just post how ugly he is, or post about his sloppy divorse, or how he and Jeter were spotted in a 'man-only' bar in Provincetown...   someone here mentioned his divorce one...

More importantly, why would anyone team want to go out of their way to keep that bat in the lineup???   His days of hitting .300 are probably long behind him but he's still sufficient at getting on base and when he does get on, he's proved to be a very intelligent base stealer.  He won't swipe 50 bases in a season or anything crazy but he's more than capable of putting himself into scoring position if the team needs him...

i know - what i'm saying is the Sox will tell him they have no place for him. Take the money and go away. That's what will happen. They aren't bringing him back unless it's as a coach.     So you'd pass up 3 million dollars a year for sitting on the bench? Do you know any other squad that would spend money on him?     you misunderstand this -that player option guarantees $ , not a roster spot. They...

"He won't swipe 50 bases in a season or anything crazy but he's morethan capable of putting himself into scoring position if the team needshim to." He'd have to double his career total to reach 50. 25 steals in 43 career attempts.  Apparently, the Sox rarely needed him to put himself into scoring position.  And when they did he wasn't very good at it. Somehow I don't see Boras highlighting his prowess on...

"Tek can DH or play 1B on days off" He'll be 38, and hasn't played 1st once in his MLB career.     More importantly, why would anyone team want to go out of their way to keep that bat in the lineup???     Two logic fails in one sentence: 1) Obviously the acquisition of Tek is not going to be a "going out of our way" thing for whatever team does it. This is short money, short time, club option if > 1...

How did you figure that from what I just posted?? Varitek is good behind the plate (1 passed ball, 3 errors).  He doesn't throw out runners (only 16 CS) and he can barely hit (.703 OPS)... He is far from the best catchers in the league and he is far from the worst catcher in the league...     You stated he's an elite defensive/great offensive catcher. This is just absurd Steve, even for Boston Red Sox homerish standards!...
