Actually in Russia people have never celebrated it before USSR collapsed. But after americanization had just began, we sank into it. Now people celebrate it in
schools, universities(but more seldom), in clubs, at home and etc. Globalization.
But again it's just new occasion to have fun and to drink a lot of alcohol

In ancient Russia this day also meant meeting the winter and the day of memory of the dead.
In Russia it's called Dmitrievskaya subbota(saturday), it was established by Dmitrty Donskoy in the regard of dead warriors of Kulikovskaya Bitva( battle)
in 1380. (When we won Mamai(mongol) on the 8th september 1380)
