Thread: Hammer Strength vs free weights

I like using the hammer strength machines because I can load up a bunch of weight without a spotter and go to fatigue. It also feels more comfortable to me, probably since I am not having to balance the weight. I have always heard that free weights are better, but when I was watching Hard Knocks on HBO it appeared they were mainly using hammer strength machines and I believe they also use them ...

Both work well for multiple reasons. Hammer strength allows for no spotter and you can work to fatigue without consequences compared to free weights. Free weights, however, work all muscles. What I mean is that it takes every muscle fiber to balance, counter and lift the free weights and Hammer Strength does not allow for that. So, IMO, using them both together is the best option.

I agree with Tank. The hammer machines do a great job building pure strength without the need for a spotter, but it is those more minor muscles that are the ones that actually will keep you from getting hurt if you ever need to use that strength in the real world.

I also like how on Hammer Strength as you get tired you can still hold proper form much easier. With free waits I really have to concentrate hard to insure I keep good form.

I agree with Tank. The hammer machines do a great job building pure strength without the need for a spotter, but it is those more minor muscles that are the ones that actually will keep you from getting hurt if you ever need to use that strength in the real world.
