Thread: Gt3 Brake discs melted

Started 8 months, 3 weeks ago by mpowersurf
I have installed on my 987 3.8 X51 Boxster 6pot calipers with 355mm steel discs ftom GT3. The weird thing that I am experiencing is that after 15.000km (around 10.000miles) I have half life from my pads left (original Porsche pads) but my discs are destroyed! I have huge vibrations which make replacement inevitable. I heard from someone that I should fir again the standard discs but with ...

If your rotors are ruined after 10,000 miles I would guess that something wasn't installed correctly. You don't seem to be having much luck with whomever it is you are trusting to modify your Cayman. I would recommend trying someone else with more experience if possible.

My guess is your brake bias is now very much tilted toward the front, especially if you haven't added more braking power to the rear. If you're going to run that much braking power on the car, since it has a lot more than stock horsepower, then you should upgrade the entire system to GT3 specs and have the 987 brake controllers taken out, and 996 or 997 controllers put on. Brakes, especially ...

Tell us more how they are destroyed. Are they pad-transfered - ie pad material smeared onthem which makes them pulse under braking? Are they actually not flat due to improper installation? So you have the stock rear brakes with GT3 setup up front?

K-Man S, Was reading through the article you posted, and I was hoping to get some clarification on a few of the points. You suggested buying a 2nd set of seat-belt latches. With the 2nd set of latches, will the wire harness plug directly into it (without any cutting of wires)? Additionally, what do you do about the weight sensor? If it's not plugged in, does it default to the front ...

Todd, the problem is that the GT3 seats don't have the thorax airbag or any control units or wiring for it, so you can't possibly have all of the factory airbags if you put in GT3 seats, this is why some people are now going to the new GT2 seats which are about twice the price, but include the weight sensor, thorax bags, etc. The standard seatbelt latch has a wire coming from it, but you ...

I don't know if disabling the seat belt and weight sensors would stop the airbags from firing I would NOT think that would be the case as the seat belt sensors are just there to determine if the belt is latched or not (for chime and icon on dash). I mean if you drove around with your seatbelt disconnected and got into a wreck and your airbags didn't go off I would think someone would be suing ...

No oiling, smoking or power steering issues so far. I do have an underdrive pulley, motosport AO seperator and just added a Mantis sump extension. I check the PS fluid every event & so far haven't added any in two years. My instructors tell me I have calm hands, smooth inputs and make very few corrections. Even though I've been driving solo for a year I always have at least one instructed run at each event. I always learn...

I'm assuming your car has a TPC turbo or else those other drivers were asleep at the wheel because you were blowing by some of them on the straights which normally a Cayman can't do to a Z06, etc. Looks like a lot of fun! TPC Racing TPC Racing is taking orders now. Cayman club members can order with no deposit! please email: sales@tpcracing.net This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view...

Anybody have racing seats installed that are NOT the Recaro GT3 seats (or replicas)? I recently installed a set of Sparco Evo 2 seats in my car, and I purchased a 2nd set of seatbelt latches to leave connected to the sparco seat frame (so I don't have to swap with my factory seats). However, the seatbelt latch is much shorter than the side wall (hip bolster) of the seat. Actually plugging in the factory 3-pt belt (for street use) is VERY...

GT3 or Turbo Cayman - reliability

I'm all for modifying cars but in this case I think I'd go for the GT3. I recently drove an '07' GT3 and it is fantastic. My '09' CS is fun to drive both on the street and the track but for me it just doesn't get to the GT3 level. Reliability? I have several friends that have put a lot of track miles on their GT3's with no problems. I would get the DME readout for rev ranges to be safe on the warranty...

GT3 or Turbo Cayman - reliability

I've had the same thoughts but I've gone down the road with modifying my Cayman. I recently crossed the point where I could have owned a nice used GT3 by now. No regrets....but it is always on my mind. I am month or so away from 1 year with my TPC turbo . I drive it very little on the street and have about 18 track days on it. I've had minor reliability issues but not with the turbo. I've replaced both the power steering...

2:14'S at the Glen in a CS with only "a couple of little tweaks here and there" is SMOKING fast! I was especially impressed by how early you are getting on the throttle in the corners. It's hard to tell from that video, but it looks like you are coming into the corners at modest speeds, but you're flying out of them. Nice driving! I feel like I have to drive the pants off my car there to break 2:15. I was...

elh - thanks, that is very solid advice. Alignment fix? I can get that done locally - its already out of "factory spec" - I have GT3 control arms and negative camber in already. The only reason I'm considering the significant mods is that it doesn't have to be a daily driver anymore. I am old enough however, for the adage "the only enemy of good is better" to keep popping in my head. This CS is my...
