Thread: Grand Canyon trip this summer - Christmas gift ideas for gear?

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by wonderliving
Hi travel experts! I am planning my first Grand Canyon trip this June. I'm in my 30's and I'll be traveling with my parents, who are in their 60's. This will also be their first time. What ideas do you have for Christmas gifts that I might be able to give them, in preparation for our trip? -What might we need to pack for a summer week there? -What did you wish you had on your recent ...

A week is too long at the Grand Canyon - add Bryce or Zion to fill out the week. Gift ideas - water bottles with back or shoulder strap Guide Book (Fodors, of course) for Arizonia/Utah Windbreaker Really comfy hiking socks "wicking" t-shirts

3 day canoe trip? could you expand on that a little bit. If you mean a typical raft trip that includes some whitewater rafting, then a waterproof camera is a must have. You will want the hiking pants and shirts that dry quickly. Even fast drying underwear is a must, in my opinion. I think you will be all right with a week at GC since you are doing some of it in the river. What else do ...

Broad-brimmed hat with a chin strap---I believe the rafting outfitters recommend this. Something like a Tilley hat, or a lighter weight mesh version.

I've heard of 2 week rafting trips in the Grand Canyon, but never a 3 day canoe trip. Can you post the info here - sounds interesting.

J62, I have did a 3 day raft trip a couple of years ago. It is basically the last 90 miles or so or the Canyon. It is on a big raft that holds 15 people, as well as the gear and food. You take a small plane from Vegas, spend the Day at Bar 10 Ranch, near the rim(in the middle of nowhere). The airstip is dirt/gravel and very crooked. You are then helicoptered down the next morning into ...

Maybe a couple of books, if they enjoy reading (or looking at pretty pictures). First book I would pick would be "The Exploration of the Colorado RIver and Its Canyons" by John Wesley Powell. This is the story of his 1869 boat trip thru the canyons, the first time this had ever been done, and is a classic adventure story, with several boats destroyed, desertions and a couple of deaths. This...

Hi Wonderliving, When I read your post, I thought maybe I had written it while I was sleeping. It sounds like my family trip that is planned for June. I also am in my 30's taking my parents in their 60's to the Grand Canyon. This will be our first trip as well. We will be in Arizona for 7 days but splitting our time up in Sedona, Grand Canyon South Rim and Phoenix. I also have been ...

I was going to suggest a headlamp; you can get some good ones at REI and Croakies for their glasses or sunglasses. Water shoes like Keen's are nice if you know their sizes.

Bill_H's suggestion of books is a great idea. The more you read about the Grand Canyon (especially history and geology) the more you appreciate what a wonder it is. In addition to Powell's own book, consider the Wallace Stegner biography, "Beyond the 100th Meridien". What an amazing feat that was, to float down that river into the unknown. Stegner's son Page Stegner wrote a coffee-table...

Hiking pants. They will need a couple pair apiece. My very favorites are Exofficio Buzz-Offs (insect repellent built in). http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/258,93632_Ex-Of ficio-Buzz-Off-Insect-Shield-Pants-Convertible-For -Women.html They zip up from the bottom to allow you to get in and out (sorta) with your boots on. They have another zipper above the knee so you can zip the bottom part...

You got advices already for water flasks, hats and daypacks. I would get lots of sunblock - oh my, June will be sooo hot!!! Do they sell gift certificates? Maybe for a restaurant at the Grand Canyon for at least one nice dinner.
