Thread: Got my engine back (Rallycar)

Started 5 months, 2 weeks ago by swiftmotorsport
Finally got the engine back in my rally car after 18 months of scrimping and saving. It came off the dyno yesterday and made 155bhp and 120lb ft of torque (atmo). Coupled with the proper box that I have (reckoned to only loose 5% through the transmission) that equates to just over 147bhp atw . I'll try to post some pics soon, and maybe some video as I'm competing at the weekend and will ...

gee Andy it's been a long time coming, all the financial pain will disappear when the helmet goes on, unless your wife finds the receipts and then it's a whole other level of pain 5% friction loss? I'd be curious to know how you figured that, most 2wd boxes are 15%-25% 4wd systems are upto 40%. D

Bad news I'm aftraid as I retired on the 1st stage. . A mile or so in the car started making some ominous noises from under the bonnet (the sort of sound a grinder makes when grinding metal) when flat out in 5th(120mph), when I lifted off it sort of disapeared, so I backed off a little which was fine until the next junction which was a tight hairpin right, when I tried to change down the ...

Sorry to see you had bad luck in the first stage. Hopefully all fixed and ready to go for the next race soon!. I am also interested in the comments about substantial reduction in drivetrain loses and would really like to hear more about how you managed to do this. Any info greatly appreciated.

The bad news just gets worse. It turns out the flywheel bolts have sheared as I suspected, however it does get a lot worse as when the flywheel detached itself it started wanging around on the gearbox input shaft, which in turn made the shaft bend and caused the teeth on 2nd gear not to mesh correctly and broke one off which the hit the 3rd gear . I have just had a 6 hour round trip to collect...

Hey Andy That really really sux, you have my complete empathy, it's totally frustrating when 5 quid parts fail and do so much damage, next time you might want to buy some ARP flywheel bolts. Who torqued the flywheel bolts? is it a case of over tightening? can't remember the factory setting but it's actually not very tight. The input shaft in your box would be very specific, I wouldn't think ...

The "professional" engine builders put the engine together including the flywheel and bottom pulley (more of which later). Now you would expect the "professional" builders (who have built many many race and rally engines) to say that the standard flywheel bolts probably aren't up to the job and either fitted them or told me to get some (maybe I should have thought of it anyway). I had a set of ...

Slicks are useless unless they are in good condition and areused properly, you have to heat them up by driveing in an s line from left to righ at above 40kmh . Make sharp turns at this speed , use wide s lines , because if you do small s lines, (stayin on your lane only ) you only heat the front and the rears will be cold. Remeber left to right , one lane to the other at above 40kmh . Check your tires after this method, use your hand to fell...

Hey Andy, congrats on finishing and getting some much needed seat time, how many in your class? and how many dnf's? I had a class win in the weekend too but only 3 of us finished it was a very very wet circuit sprint event, lots of spins, crashes and even a car fire in an Evo 2 Any news on your C/R input shaft?

Thanks for the info. I had no time to test the tyres so the first stage was the tester!! The car slid all over the place until I scubbed off some rubber and gained soem heat.....then the car stuck like flies on a fly paper. We were kicking ass in N2 with 4th in class until the 5th stage when a strange power loss kicked in. The engine felt like it was running lean as the exhaust was running so hot we were cooking in the car. We finished the...
