Somebody explain that to me? How in the hell is thier GOOD HAIR BACKLASH and PRECIOUS EXCITEMENT?
I mean all the black women angry at Chris Rock for Good Hair, Im sensing a mass of sistahs excited about Precious like this is the color purple part 2.
if Chris Rock had made Precious he would of got the same backlash he got for Good hair....
Neither Tyler nor Oprah "made" this movie. This was a book before it was a movie. A lot of readers are viewing the movie because they read the book. Tyler and Oprah helped to bring this movie to the headlines, but neither of them penned it. Also, there is plenty Precious backlash. There are numerous blogs and threads about the issue....
Im not seeing it in the real world. My man on the street observation is folks excited about seeing this.
I was a coffee cafe on the southside and a group of sexy 30ish 40ish sistahs 15 deep gathered to discuss the book and celebrate this film coming out.
I swear I hope Monique enjoys her oscar nomination.
...
I know they didnt make it. some rednecks from colorado made it. hired that monsters ball coon to direct it. then suckered oprah and tyler on to it because they both are so damn angry and damaged by thier backgrounds ANYTHING made or produced that deals with abuse they game to show it.
Tell it like it is!!! *lol* Sistas are all up in arms about being busted out for wearing weaves to the tune of 9 billion dollars a year and prayed for the failure of "Good Hair" and now they are dancing in the streets over Precious being this uplifting, cathartic experience that speaks to their souls.. PRICELESS!!...
It seems like that is the game anyway. My brother attended marymount manhatten in NY.
I will never forget he was so excited watching the Shield. his classmate who he used to do shakespearean plays and really good drama with at school, had his big break and shining moment.
he was the pimp Vic mackey and the vice unit was bossing around. ...
I'd have to see the movie to know for sure, and I'm not sure that's going to happen, but I have the suspicion that the main reason that people find it so horrible is that a fat woman is involved. I'll bet that if it was some tale of a thin tragic mulatto, there wouldn't be nearly so much disgust.
you are wrong, Lee Daniels wanted to make the movie and then he went to the couple in Colorado b/c he needed investors. And how does someone not as sucessful in entertainment "sucker" Tyler Perry and Oprah- please
thats how they do it. When the uncle tom has that idea he knows who to get that funding from. You think Larry Elder and clarence thomas and Michael Armstrong and half these damn right wing puppets with cash financing dont kinow who to get for investors.
Spike Lee had to go to rich blacks to make malcolm X. TOBY LEE knew he could find some...
No, I am not blinded by my own issues. It does not matter if you are agree with me or not. You are a grown up and are making decisions with your wallet. If your point was about Oprah apologizing to Mr. Frey, it wasn't worth addressing from my standpoint because I have addressed that in another thread on this same subject. Pay your money, buy the ticket and enjoy!
I'll bet you, at the end of the day, the reason Monique was so resistant to promoting this film is exactly what this reviewer and others have written. Clearly she has some shame for being a part of such a debacle. Hmmmm....you know, I thought about this too. You never know. Perhaps when all the hype has subsided, we will hear her real motivation for not wanting to promote the film.
put up what? shit like this? and who is on the sideline? What other billionaires of color out there NOT FINANCING THIS BULLSHIT. Between tyler, Oprah bob johnson Russell Simmons WHERE ARE THE BILLLIONAIRES OF COLOR putting out images that dont put us down as a people?
I was speaking specifically about myself. The fact that Daniels (as a black man) feeds into, rather than challenges, the prejudices that exist in our society leads to be especially harsh on him. And Daniels seems particularly cruel toward BW. I still remember that seen from Monster's Ball when Halle's character was laughing about how fat her son was the day after he died.
that's my point the oprah/frey thing is irrelevant. what i was stating now is that i clearly said that i DID NOT WANT 2 SEE THE MOVIE and i have no plans to see it. but u'r so stuck on your nonsense u didn't see that. and your repeated encouragement 4 me 2 c the movie looks dumb on your part. but whatever, i see i'm wasting my time with someone who doesn't want 2 engage in conversation. u just wanna get on a...
b/c they didn't read the book and don't want to. They think yt folks didn't know about this book although it had a major publisher and was a best seller
I don't trust Hollywood to treat Black issues in a way that is anything but ultimately offensive, so I tend to stay away from these movies, especially when they're preachy. That goes for Negroes in Hollywood - system structure determines system behavior and they're just cogs in the wheel - willing to stoop to anything to try to keep a gig. I had no particular plans to see either of these movies. At least you can trust the Tyler...
This reviewer could not have put it better! This line: with a year’s worth of Oprah shows tossed into the mix for good measure. is just classic! I think most thinking people saw this for what it is without even HAVING to see this "film". All's you really have to do is take Lee Daniels body of work thus far, and there you have it. Not even lost on White reviewers is the obvious racist thought process clearly on display...
