awhile back I bought a gel type battery for my [now sold] DRZ 400. seemed ok and was fairly light but that bike takes a smallish battery anyway.
Yesterday I needed to replace my Weestrom batt which lasted almost EXACTLY 5 years. Checked a couple of places, and Wally World had the size, in a brand "Everlast", and it seems a sealed lead-acid type if I'm reading right. I have not put it ...

Gel batteries tend to hold up better from what I have seen. I have a lead acid "standard" battery in my GS700 and during the season it went nearly dry, so I had to refill it with water - should have been checking it, I know - but a gel battery is a no maintenance battery meaning you never check the water level. Not that you could in those batteries, and a sealed lead acid battery is supposed to...
I find anything from Wallyworld to be of questionable qality unless you absolutely know who made it because it has their name on it. That said, I bought an Everlast for my old truck because it died on a Sunday AM, and Wallyworld is closer than Sears. I have had the battery for about 5 years in a rarely driven vehicle without a trickle charger and it works every time. I would give it a shot, ...
WalMart batteries are CRAP. IF you fill them and chage them perfectly, your lucky to get a good crank even at first. The best battery I have found is these guys http://www.power-sonic.com/index.php?id=48
I have let one of em sit for a year while on deployment with no batt tender and it cranked right up. You can't kill these things!
lot to think about
AGM: is that a gel battery?
Flathead: I looked at that site but don't see how to order. they appear to be lead acid except for the weestrom they show two types, with one being two pounds lighter ... is that a gel type?
Not a big fan of Wallyworld. I got one of these a while back: http://www.odysseybattery.com/index.html It's been really great not having to worry about water levels. Also, it seems to do really well in cold weather. You could also go to a 'Batteries Plus' store. They sell the Odyssey and other types. They have rehabbed many of my cordless tool batteries, and would be able to answer all ...
For a more conventional lead/acid battery, I still recommend the Yuasa Yumicron battery...not the standard Yuasa. I've hammered these batteries for years in KLR600/650's over the years and have had excellent reliability and service life from them. I ride off road, and I've never had a vibration or failure issue from this model battery. I'm not dissin' gel or sealed batteries or such, but the ...
yep... I'm returning the wallyworld. this is an AGM batt [that's good] but they make the user the end of the mftr process so that battery doesn't age... its actually not a bad idea, that is that the buyer has to put SULFURIC acid into the thing .
I can handle that part, but as with all things mftd., there is a certain percentage that will suffer defects causing them to early life, like ...

I have it on shortlist, but haven't heard from anyone that has had one longterm. How old is yours?

I got tired of the standard wet cell batteries evaporating fluid, and for the lack of maintenance alone I'm very happy with the new battery for that alone. I was unable to find an AGM battery the previous time I bought a battery, and I'm not certain...

Zapp, Do you have a BattriesPlus anywhere near? They keep an extensive stock on hand, from bargain batteries on up to the pricey, high-tech stuff. Sarah

If you have to put the acid in yourself, then it is not AGM. (Absorbed Glass Mat) AGM batteries are sealed.
Just because of the environment a motorcycle is in, I don't think I would use anything by an AGM or Gel battery. Unlike a car battery, a motorcycle sees more shock/vibration and the battery is being turned in all sorts of odd angles/slopes. Adding the acid is real easy. I had to do it on the Yuasa battery for my DRZ (But not the one for my XCh). I think because the DRZ battery is fairly small and unusual, they are more concerned with it...
