This article makes it clear that it's still pre-beta, but also that it sounds pretty cool. http://maketecheasier.com/gnom...vironment/2009/09 /09 My time spent trying KDE 4 convinced me that kwin did some neat things and KDE4 is pretty -- but at that time it was beyond my level of experience or desired frustration to get it all working like I wanted. (This is nothing against KDE4, it wasn't ...
quote: Originally posted by hictio: Not my cup of tea. Isn't this like GNOME + Do on steroids? Unless I'm wrong (and maybe I am) I think a better analogy is to say it's like kwin under KDE 4.0. It appears to me to replace metacity + add features that don't currently exist. IOW I think it's the default window manager for GNOME 3.0. From the article: quote: It pretty much replaces ...
Gnome shell stuff is part of the push for 'Gnome 3.0' which should be out in beta form about mid-next year. Basically the idea is to clean up Gnome dependencies by allowing a break in the API/ABI (nothing like KDE4 though), introduce a updated user interface, and integrate more internet services. Something like that. The fancy stuff that you see with things like Maemo and Moblin are Gnome 3.0-...
I'm running it right now following the directions from the article in the OP. It doesn't take but about 10 mins to get things set up and running. As he alludes, it's pretty feature and option -sparse, but I do like it. The animations it has are relatively smooth, and while such animations as it has aren't really inherently innovative these days, I do like how things are set up. I'm looking ...
The screenshots make the whole thing look terrible to me. The entire premise of it rubs me the wrong way. If that is really what is coming next, I may dump Gnome.
here is some screencasts of how it's suppose to work. http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Screencasts Here is a video of 'sidebar' + 'gnomeshell' + 'gnome zeitgeist' I'd rather have that then the application menu + compiz. As long as the application menus are orginized or at least searchable.
Tried this out over the weekend. I like what I see so far, but I think I'll wait for them to add a little customisablity. The large swaths of black when in overlay mode gets a little oppressive after a while. If there is a way to change it I didn't see it, but I also didn't look very hard. Looks like a great shell for netbooks and other limited screen real estate computers though. I like the ...

I lubs me some compiz, but I thought the effects were both very cool and yet not quite so in-your-face as many of the compiz effects. (Not that I wouldn't like to see more effects as the product matures.) I probably should have played with it longer, but there were ...

I've never installed anything using the methods in the article before and don't really know what to do to get rid of it. It's not hurting anything I suppose, but at some point I'm going to want to uninstall. It seems to be a typical source install in your home directory (unless maybe you deviated from instructions and ran the...

Gnome Shell:...
