Thread: Glyc logs in calor gas bottle burner.....brilliant!

Started 1 month ago by pjfireman
Have given up with my alaska burner in my converted gas bottle burner, not enough heat output. So this winter have changed over to wood burning and tried some glyc logs made with sawdust in plastic milk containers......wow! They burn hot, clean and for ages. Well pleased just got to find a good supply of sawdust in cambs.

Try small carpentry/ joinery works for sawdust. They tend to be glad to get rid of it. Larger outlets are generally tied to board makers and the sawdust is fed directly into their containers.

I like your design, can we see more of it please? How does the flue work? D ick

pjfireman replied 1 month ago
flue is steel water pipe at 114mm diameter, used for the supply of water to sprinkler systems. goes through wall at 90 degrees (which i know is not ideal) then up into proper twin walled stainless flue pipe.

Very interesting! Does the glyc have to be de-methed? Nick.

What about that poisonous gas which comes out when glycerine is burnt? This is the only thing which stops me from making glyc logs...

is that in your garage joined onto your house ? (guessing by the window/door... too nice for a shed! etc..) if so.... fill it up and leave the door to the house open, see if you can get some extra heat out of it!) p.s. Quote: Respect D!ck I'd hate to be in prison and hear that!

Do you have an air inlet vent to your garage somewhere? Would hate to think of you carbon monoxiding yourself. Looks very tidy, wouldn't mind one of them in my shed

I run the glyc, hot, into an open container 3/4 full of chain saw saw dust. (I use one of those garden tubs but a low sided one from a farmers supplier)This is then left to set for a week or 2, and it does set, before cutting up with a spade and wrapping the bricks in old newspaper to keep them nice to handle. I use NaOH and WBD with no prewash. I find that now even if no sawdust is added the glyc sets hard. D ick

My glycerine is still runny due to the pre-wash. I've got a log maker (one of those ones with two handles for compressing shredded paper into logs) and some sawdust, but still haven't got around to trying to make logs yet. It's going to be messy!

I can never get them to set as such, even with NaOH and even if demethed. Usually I put the shavings into a tub, pour in the warm glyc, leave a while, then mix while keep adding the sawdust. when its very thick I then put on gloves, and stuff it tightly into milk cartons, with holes in both ends for drainage, and stack them to drain. In winter they will be fairly set, but never properly, which is where a real press would come in. The harder...
