Hi PowerNow. The laptop comes with Vista so it should read all 4GBs if one decides to upgrade. The article referenced upgrading to Windows 7 but there is no official indication that this laptop qualifies for any free upgrade.

Is that processor 64 bit to handle 4Gb of RAM?
Either way, that's not a bad processor for a young student only browsing the web and doing schoolwork.

Hi Darren. No worries. I missed it and figured I would add it for others. Good article. Do you have any idea if this computer qualifies for a free upgrade to Windows 7?

There is a 32-bit version of Vista though, which is what I was wondering. I'm pretty sure you can't install a 64-bit OS on a 32-bit processor. I'm not sure when processors first became 64-bit, so I have no idea about the Celeron.

Would I be able to buy this and then install Linux on it instead? I've never messed with Linux before but will need a cheap training Linux machine for my upcoming course.

( Sweet deal based on the specs. I don't remember if Win XP PRO, comes with a partition utility built in, in which case you can go to Cnet.com, at the top middle of the page there is a tab for DOWNLOADS, and from here you can search \(search box\) for Hard Drive formatting utilities. Or on the left colums, under utilities. Stick to the one's review by the Editors a Cnet.com or Excelent reviews by users. Editors first at all cost....
( Thanks Goed, Great info. I have not bought the Compaq yet.. still have a few questions. I have Partition Magic 8.0 for NTFS format which I have used successfully on my external backup HD. Not sure about the drive format in the Compaq. I'll look up the CNet Partition program. Compaq may have a RESTORE partition problem if they emulate HP. My wife has an HP desktop and I tried to reinstall/install XP on an auxiliary hard drive I added--...
( I think I read somewhere the Celeron is a busted Pentium. Many features are turned off or totally disabled. Celerons no matter how high the clock speed is...is a slow CPU. At 2.2 it will be good, but with a smaller cache, no HT and other Pentium benefits. Its cheap. That CPu probably cost $50 on newegg maybe slightly more...but compare it to its full spec'd big brother its way different. Then Intel 4500 isn't much with only 1GB of...
( ultimate windows tweaker, which is free, gets you 4gb+ ram allocation on 32bit systems. don't need upgrade to 64 bit and waste $100 on unstability and compiz ripoff. , )

( This machine comes with Windows Vista Home Basic. Home Basic doesn't qualify for the free windows 7 upgrade, it needs to be Home Premium and above. +"People who buy a PC equipped with Windows Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate from a participating retailer or computer maker will get an upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate at some point after Oct. 22, when Microsoft ships the new OS."+ , )
( All the Vista machines I purchased since it came out have been dual core and have done fine - I get giddy and purchase one that wasn't at a Staples $299 sale - big mistake and it's a dog and I will be supporting that til I either figure out how to goose up Vista Basic more or put Ubuntu on it and call it a day - it will not run more then one program at a time with out unacceptable delay. To me - a deal is not a deal if I have to...
