it is likely grim, as opensource drivers are quickly catching up to fglrx feature-wise.
but ati on linux is not for cultists. it works reliably with opensource drivers.
i can't say much about fglrx, since i decided to stop using it after 8.36 totally broke xvideo. i don't care whether it's fixed now, i'm not giving fglrx another chance because i don't have to :]
open drivers work reliably? wow, you're easy to please. "the thing doesn't crash". catalyst 8.5 sure crashed for me, horribly. It wants to work, but once opengl starts, it either segfaults right away, or runs for a bit, then crashes and locks up the system. I'm sure a lot of people want to buy expensive, dedicated 3d cards to move around some windows on an open driver. Forget it, the only way for...
is amd going to create drivers to use the external graphics cards on linux? after reading the announcement today i was really excited but then read it was vista only
Fglrx must be easier to install and tune!
If we want more folks to join Linux community and buy ATI cards the company must finally change that ancient graphic installer and provide a GUI for aticonfig so that every newbie user can tune the driver correctly.
Furthermore driver's documentation must be completely re-written and filled with information for new stuff and help for new users so that...

It's for unfortunate souls who bought an ATI I think AMD should stick a label on the boxes that goes like "If you use Linux please don't buy this."

As you can guess, everyone's complaining about the constant tearing :P
Haha, nice, this was mine.
I was a bit bored at work.
will this problem ever be fixed?

Hi Guys,
I admit being new on the forums, and I have just got to ask: Will Catalyst 8.9 support xorg-server-1.5.x, or did I read that ATI will not support server-1.5, but will wait until xorg-server-1.6.x? I would like to know...
I just updated my Gentoo installation which put xorg-server-1.5.1 on my system (and it was a hassle to manual hunt down and install all of the right versions of ...

R900 will be the new architecture in 1 year or later and yes most of the dev's work on r900 then.. but amd does not drop support for the R600-R800 on the...

Hmm, I'm not quite sure what You mean, but that is a Mobility Radeon, which seems to be the only card on that system, check this: http://www5.pc.ibm.com/europe/products.nsf/$wwwPartNumLookup/_NJ253xx?open&OpenDocument&epi=web_express I'm just worried that next year 3xxx series will be legacy AMD is doing quite a job recently, but for Linux they just cut off stuff too early... For instance, my colleague got a laptop...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my colleagues card is legacy If OSS driver would have proper 3D, I wouldn't need fglrx at all While I'm deciding (I have like 2-3 months...
Don't buy this one - especially not when it is an amd system as then you have got onboard + dedicated card which will lead to problems. If you get intel + amd it would be a bit less problematic but then i would use a card from 4+ series.
