Thread: Future Shop Selling Martin Logan

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by Tunksy31
I just noticed today on the Future Shop web site they have Martin Logan Speakers. I am wondering what others think of this. Personally I don't think that they will sell at all due to the fact that Future Shop is not considered a high end audio store and coming from the GTA there are many more companies that I would suggest to get the full set up before Future Shop. Selling these high end ...

^ BB/FS only sell the lower end of all the other "brand name" A/V gear they sell, why should these be different? To me it says ML is selling some cheap-ass speakers, cheap-ass compared to what they're known for selling. I could be wrong about this instance, but BB/FS gave up on higher-end A/V gear about 5 years ago IIRC when it didn't sell and they had to blow it out. Doesn't really seem to be ...

cfraser, FS sells a $1999 receiver by Denon, a $1399 HK, a $1999 Pioneer and a $2999 Yamaha. If you think these are low end, what do you consider to be high-end?

Quote: To me it says ML is selling some cheap-ass speakers, cheap-ass compared to what they're known for selling. According to this review at least, the Vista Xstat speakers that F.S. is selling are far from being "cheap-ass". That being said, if I were prepared to spend over $2,600 per speaker, F.S. would be the last place I would think of ...

Sorry, yeah those are higher prices than I thought. I stopped looking for a while because they *always* stopped a model or two before what I thought of as the start of the "good stuff". Like I was looking for Integra there recently...only the "lesser" Onkyos. They always stopped at least one model before the Denon AVR or Pioneer display I wanted. What can I say? You should read the business ...

I noticed that and I was considering an Energy ESW 10 (see previous thread) but now I'm thinking that the Martin Logan Dynamo 700 would be a better sub. I've never had a chance to listen to this brand, anyone with personal experience have any opinions?

Well, at least the moron with too much money and not enough brains will at least get something good at FS from the non-knowledgeable sales staff. As compared to walking out of the store with a pair of "Normally $20,000 but my manager can get them to you today for $4,000" Nuance speakers. Really, who DO they think will buy these? The only mass-merchandiser I ever saw who even come close...

I was mistaken in what I thought, that the FS MLs were "stripped down" or something. See, when I first became aware of them at FS, they were listed on FS as for a pair, which was later corrected to for each (in bold type LOL). We had discussed this on "another forum" and some people actually ordered (but don't have in possession yet of course) speakers at the mistakenly published price on the ...

In the US I've seen MLs at BB for a while. Since FS is owned by BB, it wasn't much of a stretch to add them to the lineup, but I agree it's a bit weird, even though I like and own MLs.

ScottCrick replied 1 month, 1 week ago
Hi 57, I saw them there too, but the Magnolia concept that BB has in the US is nothing like the crappy sound rooms FS seems to insist on having in Canada. Still to this day, I thought A&B Sound did it best - mainstream consumer in room A (i.e. Yamaha, Energy, Sony), and better than mainstream in room B (Totem, Mission, Marantz). Both were good listening environments. Just my $0...

^ You know, that "EZ credit" thing you said may be a big deal. Typical A/V specialist dealers don't offer credit. And quite frankly their targeted customers probably don't need it. They expect you to come with your own financial arrangements. So yeah, FS may offer some purchase ease to a different clientele. The big thing IMO is exposure to another level of performance though, so many people ...

I think we've gone full circle with the analogy anyway: the salespeople at "enthusiast" dealerships (auto/audio) have been IME quite knowledgable about their products. These are expensive products, compared to $6k speakers, VERY expensive. But if you want to talk very technical intimate details, they are not engineers etc. and you're still pretty much on your own.

Quote: You are unfairly maligning Walmart for audio gear. Walmart is a large step up for the budding audiophile who may have got their first audio gear at Canadian Tire. I'm wiping the tears from my eyes. OMG. My guts hurt. I suddenly had a vision of the "Missil" speakers they sell at XS Cargo.

Quote: Are your local Infiniti/Acura showrooms not nice? Damn, I answered it wrong again! Yes, the showrooms are nice, but when I replied to post #32 I was referring to the comment that "many of us expect a certain sales environment" and, to me, the environment includes salesmen who are informed and who are not jerks. I'll shut up now...

Quote: Am I right to be thinking that these speakers will NOT be at all locations? So people in smaller towns won't have access to these without doing ISPU anyway, which is almost no different than buying from a good hi-fi shop and mailed to your house. The only difference is the return policy. No they will not be on demo at all locations but they are available at all locations, and yes the return policy will be the same for these as...

I guess you must realize I don't think too highly of Walmart (not highly of FS either but at least a slight notch higher) Personally, given the choice I'd buy from CDN Tire before Walmart and this in a heartbeat Quote: I think part of the problem is many...

Martin Logan speakers use electrostatics for the higher frequencies and regular drivers for the woofer - a hybrid design since electrostatics would need to be the size of your wall (and many used to be) to even get a little bass. I heard my first electrostatics in the early 1970s and have been hooked ever since. The early models I auditioned were from Quad, Dayton Wright (huge) and Janszen (hybrid and huge). They were always a bit out of my...

True eljay, but that's based on what they are selling today and who they hire to sell those products. And actually, there are some experienced people working there (higher levels) that do know their product as well as any person here or in a hifi shop. But you gotta start somewhere, right? The good, knowledgable sales people won't go to F/S until the product is there, and you gotta start somewhere. I think it's great - whether it...

Those electrostats will sound like crap if not properly explained and set up- They are very particular and you need to be in the sweet spot even moreso than most other speakers. It's a nice line, but seems better suited for a smaller dealer with knowledgable staff. We had a set in the small store I worked in quite a few years ago.
