.... a group of people that were tired of comsumerism, they gave up buying things for a year, with the exception of food, health or saftey related items and absolute nessesary toiletries. This article aslo talked about communities thruout the US and Europe the are called 'freegans' - these are employed people who choose not to buy anything more than nessecary, even eating out of dumpster when...
Most people's homes are filled with crap...I cant see the NEED for some people to constantly be at Big Lots, Walmart, or the Dollar store buying more crap. Christmas commercials are all ready runnig...
Fall, along with spring, finds our neighborhoods and roadsides covered up with yard sales and people buying stuff they don't need from people who bought stuff they did not need or found out did not sate their soul. I know people who NEED "retail therapy" to justify a week of desperation in the cubicle. There is a perception that a thing or enough stuff will make us whole. We get caught up ...
I might be one of those people. I don't eat out of the dumpster, but I buy out of necessity. I don't need a bunch of extra junk. I would rather put the extra money in my pocket rather than a retailer's any day. Call me penny pincher, frugal, whatever.
I have some friends that are Freegans. The life style of Freegans aren't the way most of us think, at least these people aren't. They have all of the luxuries that are available, however they refuse to purchase them. They get everything free. They are a family of 6 with a two story 4 bedroom home, it is far from shabby & is filled with the latest luxuries. They dumpster dive for everything. ...
Stores throw away stuff just in the dumpsters right outside? I wonder why they don't donate those items and get a tax write-off? Weird. Looks like I'll have to scope out dumpsters by my house.
Stores throw away stuff just in the dumpsters right outside? It would make more sense to give these things to charity. wazhiz, your description of your friends seems, to me (and maybe I'm misreading it), to be one of admiration. For some reason, I don't find what they do admirable. I am sure I'll get torched for this, but I find it rather offensive and sickening. They apparently have ...
Ismene-yep you are right, but these people really tip the scale at weird. Nice, but kind of weird, well maybe just different. They also are very generous they give away a huge majority of what they find. They have a group of Freegans that they share with & they also share found items with non-profits. They actually don't do dumpster diving as a past time. They have a strict schedule & know ...
Hrmmm, I have refused to support companies that do not produce quality products, reguardless of nationality. I guess I am the opposite of a freegan as I am trying to kill companies like GM, etc. in favor of supporting companies like BMW/Mercedez. Anti-American? I don't think so. More like anti-short-cut. I will buy what works best, be it Japanese, or American, or whatever. My last American car...
For example, I'd find it a whole lot more admirable if people like your friends, who apparently have a lot of time to do this, took all that time and energy into putting together an organized collection of throw away products in their community and donating those items to charities, such as food banks and Toys for Tots. I'd have to agree that this would be more impressive and meaningful to ...
The more I read about it, the more disgusting and stupid it sounds. I cans see having an acre or two and growing your own food, preserving and so on. Raising chickens, rabbits, a goat, etc., and being self reliant. Making your own clothes, baking your own bread. All of that sounds nice. Bartering and trading with friends for goods and services. But scrounging and scavaging stuff, including rummaging through dumpsters, disgusting.
I find AMAZING bargains at garage sales. Sometimes you find the best deals in wealthy neighborhoods and suburbs, because people there buy new & expensive items on a regular basis and get rid of the "old" items (which sometimes aren't that old!). Like a couple months ago I went to a garage sale in an affluent area and got a perfectly good big screen TV for $50! The owner got a newer and bigger TV so he was getting rid of the...
There are some grocers and restaurants that donate leftover food to shelters, soup kitchens and food banks (I know of some here in Indiana). But obviously it takes up valuable employee time and money to do so. The local government-sponsored soup kitchen gets a lot of its food from one supermarket chain that donates its food, rather than put it in the trash. It also accepts food from people, so long as it's not out of date, like cans and...
There are some grocers and restaurants that donate leftover food to shelters, soup kitchens and food banks (I know of some here in Indiana). But obviously it takes up valuable employee time and money to do so. In Arizona, they can't even do that anymore because of Health Department laws and liability issues. No one can guarantee the food's safety, so instead, it gets thrown away. I see your point about the trouble it takes to...
My Freegan friends are more concerned with recycling than in being materialist. Yes they do have a fantastic house furnished with all the luxuries. However, they donate just as much as they keep, which I think is commendable. Grocery stores hire people to remove expired merchandise from their shelves. My Freegan friends do this also & donate the food to a homeless shelter. So it is just not about what they can get for themselves. These...
^^^^^^^Agreed. I'm not interested in shiny, new things however I'm not prepared to eat out of bins/dumpsters........... But Woolies throw out the BEST stuff!? You just have to fight the rats for it! lol
Yeah, I can respect "living off the land". You know, growing your own food, solar power, using a bike instead of a car, whatever. When you resort to dumpster-diving though, you are just an extremist outlier. A group of your kind would be referred to as a cult.
