Thread: Flickr: Discussing Thought my CLS triggering flash wouldn't be picked up on pictures... in Strobist.com

Started 3 months ago by photobyBryan
So, I've been meaning to ask about this. I've noticed that when I shoot with a solid background at the right angle, my triggering flash on my D90 even though it's set to zero output, is still causing a shadow in my dark garage studio. www.flickr.com/photos/photobybryan/3845963089/size s/o/in/... In this picture it's faint but if you look closely, you'll be able to see a ...

Interesting. I shoot Canon but plan on getting the 7D that has a similar mode as this. My friend who shoots with a D80 and a D200 told me that she can sometimes see it on certain reflective objects etc. So I don't think it's invisible. Hopefully some Nikon users chime in.

Yeah, it happens sometimes. Luckily, there's a $12 solution. It's an IR filter called the SG-3IR: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/410445-REG/Nikon_49 05_SG_3... EDIT: apparently it's out of stock at B&H. Check around though, you can probably find it somewhere.

I've heard you can put exposed and developed B&W film over the pop up flash.

ChrisValitesPhoto replied 3 months ago
Exposed film works. Cut out a small piece and use it like you would a gel.

Added bonus of the SG-3IR is that it helps with "blinkers"

Two options that work: 1) SG-3IR, as Tim noted. 2) Push the shutter speed over the X-sync limit to force the camera into FP Sync. The pop-up flash won't show at all, as it'll trigger before the shutter starts to open. On a D90, the X-sync limit is 1/200, so setting the shutter to 1/250 will force the issue.

Another option: SU-800 Commander

Instead of "--", I set the on-camera flash to "1/32". It contributes much less light that way. Barely noticeable, if at all.

I have the same problem. Another issue with using the popup flash and CLS is when shooting outdoors and the off-camera flash is behind you. Then I've found CLS doesn't work. The off-camera flash will not fire. A solution to both of these issues is to use a sheet of paper or something else (I've used my left hand for example) that blocks the light from the popup flash and ...

@ Gyorffy.. yes CLS must have a line of sight to work.. obviously if the flash is behind you it just is not going to work unless you bounce it back in some way. Indoors it will bounce off a ceiling or any other reflective surface and trigger CLS flashes quite a bit in situations where there is not an absolute line of sight. Good solution with the sheet of paper btw!...

Here's another one where you can clearly see my trigger flash being captured in my subject's eyes: Can't wait for my Yongnuos to come in - though max sync speed of 1/200th on my D90 sort of blows...

I originally bought one of these ( www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/410445-REG/Nikon_4905_SG_3... ) but decided to get an SU-800 a couple months later so I don't need the IR panel anymore. if you want it, Bryan, I can throw it in a padded envelope and mail it to you, it is just taking up space here.

I used to think Nikon said that if you set the Master flash to -- then the flash from that camera will not show up in the photo. However, I actually read the manual for the SB800 (first time I've ever done that), and Nikon specifically states that the light from the flash when set to -- can show in the photograph. I would suggest you aim the flashead away from your subject in the future.
