Thread: Flickr: Discussing Softbox vs. white umbrella in LightSource

Started 2 years, 4 months ago by Matt Cline
I would like to build a softbox for my Novatron strobe set, but there is a problem. The Novatron heads don't have anywhere to mount the box and the hinges that hold the head to the stand are not sturdy enough to hold that much weight anyway. So, I am wondering if the lighting effect would essentially be the same if instead of shooting through a softbox if I instead shot through ...

I disagree with josh... when used with a large enough umbrella the light can be just as soft. Heres the trick... use a really large shoot thru umbrella and feather the light. your image should look as soft as this. All i used in this image was a 60" westcott optical white satin umbrella. I feathered it heavily (aimed the center of the umbrella more toward the camera instead ...

noooo you can get the alienbees one very cheap but you can get the B&H photovideo one even cheaper... just watch the quality... if you arnt satisfied right outta the box... send it back for a new one... the one I got wasnt good... (great with the light) but not great on a tip (it came out) and it had black ink on the satin from the black cover. (The black ink was probably from it ...

my image above is shot with the B&H one. Thats all. No reflector no nothin. Just feathered the light toward the camera and... POW! F4.5 with it no more than 3.5 ft away on my flashes lowest power. go to my tutorial here at studiolighting.net www.studiolighting.net/quick-start-guide-to-the-on e-light...

but hey... i'm not knocking softboxes... it just takes a lot more money into a softbox to get light this soft. Bigger softbox softer light... bigger softbox = more money!

60inch umbrella... outdoors... during wind... sorry bro.. but it sounds like a recipe for disaster! plan on buying about 100 sandbags to put on that massive lightstand!

I bought a 60" photogenic eclipse umbrella for $49.95 new from ebay from jwphoto. I am desperate to use it but I live in an area so windy that every time I go out I feel like Mary Poppins.

About $45-60 it you are looking at westcott. Very affordable or you can get the Alienbees one for even cheaper: www.alienbees.com/utwb.html

Excellent. Thank you, both. Wonder what a 60" umbrella goes for :)

A shoot througfh umbrella probably won't get you light that is as soft as a softbox. Maybe something like the Photek Softliter would do the trick for you.
