Thread: Flickr: Discussing SU-4 Wireless Remote TTL Flash Controller for D40 users in Nikon D40/x Users

Started 2 years ago by Flintz
This little gadget will fire the slave flash. Can be attached to any current Nikon Speedlight and many previous models. I have SB400 and hope it will work well with it. I hope it is worth to buy for the D40 users. How do you think?

So if I attach this to my flash, it'll respond to the D40's on-board flash? It'd be great if it worked with the little SB400 I've got. Anyone know anything?

SouthsideDuc replied 2 years ago
It will probably fire the SB-400 but you will have no control over the flash output. In other words, the combo would be pretty useless. You need a flash that has a manual setting (SB600 or Vivitar 285 for example).

Help!! Isn't SU-4 working with SB400. I bought it from a camera accessory shop. The sale-person test it with some Niikon flash (big one, don't know the type) and it was working at the shop. When I get back home and test it with my SB 400, it doesn't work. I have no idea and what to do. The flash ready light on the SB400 is on but it doesn't respond to any flash. According to...

Thanks SouthsideDuc for your reply. Yes, J. Craigen, I'm thinking of putting my Omnibounce diffuser onto SB400 when using SU-4. But I don't know whether I should buy SU-4 so far. Thanks Benrobertabq for your kind explaination. Buying accessories for camera is headache for me. I singapore, most of the camera shops are always merciless and trying to sell with very high price. If we do...

photomodo: I believe it will work well with SB400 as well. Minimal amount of flash on the built-in flash will trigger the slave flash mounted over it. We can do a lot of experiments and variety of creations. how nice. southsideduc: Can we adjust the amount of flash by putting the flash in various distances, can't we? Don't you think it work?

SouthsideDuc replied 2 years ago
Flintz, moving the flash away would result in less light but would create issues with spill. Easier just to buy a cheap manual flash.

throw a diffuser on the 400, maybe?

The SU-4 is essentially just an optical trigger, although probably a reliable one, and with a Nikon brand of course. If you just need an optical trigger you can get a simple one for about $15 on eBay search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?query=optical+sl ave+fla... that should fire any flash, Nikon or otherwise. I'm not even sure how easy it is to find the SU-4 any more, I ...

The Strobist site really is a wealth of information about lighting in general, as well as off-camera flash. There's also a Strobist forum on Flickr as well, worth a look, or you can post more lighting questions there if someone hasn't already got a post that gives you the info you need. Good luck!

The SU-4 is a optical trigger, it responds to the on-board flash on your camera. It will fire the strobe like it was on the hot-shoe. But the SB-400 does not have a manual mode, it has two modes, ON and OFF. The SB-400 only supports i-TTL (Through The Lens metering), it will probably not fire with a SU-4 because it'll need instructions from the camera. But if you like you ...
