Thread: Flickr: Discussing OT: SB-800 SU-4 Optical Sensor in Strobist.com

Started 2 months, 3 weeks ago by Caelen Weber Photography 
Hello, I was just wondering if I can dip into the vast wealth of knowledge here and ask if anyone knows if you can buy an optical sensor that is the same as the one in an SB-800. I know about Wein sensors, but I just wondered if anyone knew the exact one in the SB800, just because it's so stinking reliable and sensitive in all conditions. Thanks so much. Keep strobing......

It's a bit expensive but you can always buy an actual SU-4 .

The "actual" SU-4 is probably major overkill for anyone who doesn't need/use the "Auto" quench mode. Ghu knows the thing's expensive enough... Personally, I'd give Lon over at FlashZebra a ping and see what he recommends for optical slave triggers.

Will do, thanks. Just did a wedding today and used my SB800 in SU-4 mode handheld with an SB600 on camera(both in Manual Mode)aimed at the ceiling for loosely 'clam shell' lighting the dances. Bounced the SB800 off the floor. Worked pretty well, but we'll see how they look when not on a 2.5" LCD. ;)
